Review of Doncaster Urgent Treatment Centre
10th August 2021

My initial phone contact was brilliant & I was offered an appointment at 11.30 but when I got there I was told that they weren't running an appointment system. I then had to wait 2 hours to be seen. There was 2 GP on duty who seemed to take at least 10 minutes between appointments ending and them calling the next person in. Also people came in after me but got seen before me.

Suggested improvements
An appointment shouldn't be offered if appointments aren't available. But it would be better if the appointment system was keep like an ordinary practice, and people without appointments were fitted in after those with appointments. Also prescription despensed should be able to be collected from the Pharmacy in the hospital not off site as I was told, some people would struggle to collect them , especially as the pharmacy is next to the urgent care client in the hospital

I was asked to visit after a phone call screening because I have asthma. I advise dr on phone that I had done at least 2 lateral flow test for covid and they were negative. When I got there I told the dr I felt like I was going to pass out and he just said I can see other patients while you get together. I said no and had to just carry on. I felt like I had done something wrong as he said you have to get PCR test coz lateral flow are specific to non symptomatic people. Why wasn’t I just told this on the phone rather than waste time. I was hoping I would get some steroids to help with my breathing but no nothing just get pcr test. I then got negative test results and went to my drs who gave me steroids to help with my breathing. Feel as though urgent care dr just washed his hands of me and felt like i was wasting his time.

Suggested improvements
Yes maybe not just wipe there hands of me coz of not doing a pcr test. They could have still prescribed steroids to help me.

Although I was seen 3 hours after my appointment time it was extremely busy. The doctor I saw was kind, thorough and had an excellent bedside manner. I was very grateful to be seen and treated.

Suggested improvements
Letting people know how long the wait would be would have been helpful. There could do with a camera feed from reception to the back room so the receptionist could see when people arrive to book in. I waited 15 minutes to be booked in when I first arrived.

The doctor who saw me was good in terms of level of care provided. However, the receptionist was both rude and extremely unsympathetic. I had an appointment at 11pm and arrived at 11:05 as we got lost on the way to the urgent care area. We went left at A and E rather than continuing on (as this is where the care centre used to be) and got lost. We spent a good 10 minutes trying to find someone to direct us (we were also having to walk significantly slower due to how unwell I was). When we arrived the receptionist was quite abrupt. After waiting 30 minutes, I asked how long it was likely to be as by this point I felt like I was going to pass out I felt that unwell. I was told that because I was late, they were seeing all the other patients first. I was effectively being pushed for being not even 5 minutes late because we got lost and it took longer to walk there due to how poorly I was. When I was eventually seen at 11:45, the doctor I saw did my observations and immediately realised how poorly I was. My temperature was 40+ and I had a very high pulse rate but very low blood pressure. This resulted in him urgently admitting me to a ward and ringing people urgently to get this sorted. He was keen to not go into ‘lots of details’ about how long I had been poorly and to ‘keep it brief’ as he needed me seeing ‘urgently’. If I hadn’t been made to wait 45 minutes for something that was unexpected in terms of why we were late, this possibly wouldn’t have happened. When I had asked the receptionist, she did not care how unwell I was and was very rude to me simply saying it was ‘my fault’ that I was being made to wait. I’m extremely disappointed with this service, especially when my daughter attended the out of hours service last month and had an appointment time of 10pm and still hadn’t been seen at 12 am, by which point my husband brought her home and we contacted the GP the following morning. Letting babies wait over 2 hours to be seen when they have an appointment time is appalling, as is punishing someone for being 5 minutes late due to getting lost snd then having to walk the length of the hospital to find the clinic.

Suggested improvements
Retrain your receptionists to treat people with divinity, empathy and respect. Don’t punish patients for being 5 minutes late when they are seriously poorly. Don’t make babies waif 2 hours + for an appointment in a corridor because the waiting room was so full.
