Having recently completed my titration with Carol (my nurse prescriber) via Psychiatry-UK I have nothing but absolute gratitude and respect for the level of care she provided me. I had not expected a diagnosis of adult ADHD, but had been prompted to be assessed when my siblings were diagnosed. When I began my titration, I was naturally inquisitive and anxious about all aspects of the process, and Carol gave me the key details that made me relaxed again, and left feeling in the care of someone who understands both the medicine and the patients' viewpoint. When it came to increasing dosage she was always very attentive, and provided good advice if I ever encountered any side effects. After the initial titration period Carol was always very clear about the options I had for medication, and encouraged an open discussion about how to adapt it to suit me as an individual, and my work/life style. She also gave me examples of how some patients preferred it so I was aware of how different treatment regimes may help. A great example of this was how I found it difficult to take the maximum dosage every day of the week, and we ultimately decided that I would be better off reducing my dosage on weekends / social days to compensate. Ultimately I am leaving the country for work abroad, and Carol helped me to get the evidence required to travel overseas & continue my treatment in a new job. On a personal note I always felt that Carol listened to how I felt, rather than making any assumptions (as with some previous care providers). Her interest in patient welfare is always a massive strength in someone who is providing your care. The titration process was so smooth, I have newfound confidence in my ability to manage my life and work going forward despite my newly understood condition. I have upmost respect and gratitude to Carol and Psych-UK as a whole, they are a fantastic service providing patient tailored care. I recommend her highly to anyone seeking treatment. NHS England could learn a lot about how to provide adult mental health services from their example. Thank you Carol Shue, you have helped me make sense of my diagnosis & prepared me best for going forward with treatment!

Carol was my titration nurse while finding a medication for newly diagnosed ADHD. My titration was not a quick process and I had to try several different medications before finding one that helped me. Even though I'm sure my messages were somewhat chaotic and rambling at times, she always responded with clear information and compassion. I never once felt judged. I know that the nurses at Psychiatry UK are under a huge workload at the moment; despite this and my lengthy titration, Carol always responded swiftly and without making me feel like a burden. I'm very grateful to her and the entirety of Psychiatry UK - my diagnosis and medication have been life changing.

Carol was very helpful and responded in a timely fashion to my Portal messages. Sometimes, I felt that she hadn't read my messages fully, and so I would have to send another message to clarify the point/s she had 'missed' in my message.

Profile

I am a registered nurse prescriber. I started my journey as a mental health nurse by completing the recognised nursing course in the UK. Since qualifying as a nurse in 2011, I have worked in acute inpatient and community settings. I have helped pioneered the start of an NHS Adult ADHD service in 2011 and developed the service together with a Consultant Psychiatrist and provided a nurse led service for adults. Since 2011, I have participated in training conferences to help train other clinicians who were planning to start an adult ADHD service in their locality or those who have just started working in an adult ADHD service. I have given talks about the nurse led Adult ADHD service that I have helped pioneered in conferences/training sessions.

I was voted Clinician of The Year in 2017 in the NHS Trust I was working with, and this reflects my dedication and commitment to continue to develop my nursing practice and deliver the best nursing intervention to those in need.
