Review of Emergency Care Centre SGH
14th June 2021

I was struggling to breath, I was sat in a booth waiting my turn, when a Dr walked past looked at me and removed my mask, I just gave the thumbs up! He saw his patient and then took me in his room and listened to me. I was then taken to a clinical area where I was put on a nebuliser and given steroids. Bloods was taken along with my BP and a ECG. All the time I was there I was made to feel comfortable and reassured. The department was clean and tidy and I felt completely safe from COVID-19. I am sorry but I cannot remember the ED Drs name to mention him. I was showed the utmost respect at all times.

Suggested improvements
The reception staff could of been a little more understanding. I was unable to answer questions in sentences my husband had to intervene. I asked if I could remove my mask but this was a stern no, they could see the distress I was in and would not let me remove this. I felt the mask was just adding to my condition. I also thought why was it other patients was being called before me when they could see I could not breath. I was just grateful the ED Dr was around where I sat!

Most of the nursing staff were rude and ignorant. I was left in the cubicle with the curtain across and no buzzer and was ignored when I asked for help. I am quadriplegic and was ignored for an hour each time I asked for a very small amount of assistance. The nurse did not tell me where she was taking me when I went for ct scan. She wordlessly wheeled me away.

Suggested improvements
Been polite and considerate.

I thought the staff were very helpful and understanding

Suggested improvements
Very difficult in this time we are going through but chairs not sanitised after each patient. I understand this can be difficult in a busy department.

I came to the department with gastritis and hadnt eaten or drank for days. I had severe abdominal pain. I had been taking the strongest over the counter painrelief I could take so they gave me oramorph. This helped a lot. However I have a long term illness that means if I get dehydrated my heart rate goes very tachycardiac and I become bed bound with debilitating symptoms which is why I had attended in the first place. A&E basically would not even consider the effects on my long term condition they just sent me home with no stronger pain relief and no extra hydration. I was very disappointed. In the 4 hours I was sat waiting I could have easily been given a bag of IV fluids as they even put a cannula in me.

Suggested improvements
I think the department needs to begin to listen to patients. I knew I had gastritis. I was already on treatment for gastritis. I was there to tackle a problem before I required an ambulance and full admission. This was completely overlooked because they don't know the condition so they ignore it. I'm extremely disappointed in the healthcare service. I know my condition and I know what I need to keep me from being admitted to hospital but if nobody is willing to listen to me when all I need is a bag or two of IV fluids then I guess we aren't very bothered about readmissions . also if it patient requires oramorph to settle pain the paracetamol on discharge will not really help.
