I have a history of recurrent UTIs and am on prophylactic antibiotics, which generally controls it. Occasionally I develop a full blown UTI and this is why I rang out of hours in the first place as I had started with symptoms in the early evening and I knew this needed treating. The person on the phone was helpful and advised a doctor would call me back, and this occurred around an hour and a half from my initial contact, around 8.30 pm I think.
Having discussed my history and current symptoms, the doctor decided I needed to be seen, rather than issuing a prescription to my local pharmacy, the earliest appointment being 02.00 the following morning. I wasn’t happy about this, but I agreed to attend. I live alone and live some 12 miles from the OOH service and wasn’t keen on driving that far in the early hours.
The staff on my arrival were pleasant, My appointment was about ten minutes later than appointed but this was not an issue to me, the doctor I saw was very kind and thorough about my symptoms, examining me and prescribing antibiotics and advice if the ones issued didn’t help after 3 days. All in all, I was there for about 25 minutes, including the few minutes I arrived before my appointed time.
All Covid precautions were in use and advice visible.
I was advised by paramedics at an event to see my GP for antibiotics due to wasp stings that were becoming infected. My GP had no appointments available (10am) and advised me to contact the local 8 while 8 service and gave me the number. They took details and said i would be called back. A few hours later I was called and apologised re the wait and asked if I still needed assistance. I said yes please the situation had worsened so I was then called back later still (6.30pm). I was told there were no appointments until 2.15am and told to visit a pharmacist to see if i could get some steroid cream which may help. The pharmacist took one look said it was too late for cream and sent me straight to a&e. There the nurse said my arm was definitely infected quite badly and sent me to the urgent care dept. At approx 10.30pm i was seen by a dr who took one look and promptly told me there was no need to have wasted a&e resources etc or take up time in urgent care when my gp could have just prescribed me antibiotics over the phone or seen me instead. He was so busy assuming I hadn't tried other options and ranting that i shouldn't be there that he even tried to check my blood pressure by putting the sleeve on my infected arm causing me to well up with the pain. When he realised he apologised and used the other arm. And said he was frustrated because 80% of the patients he had treated that evening were unnecessary. As much as i sympathised, this was not my fault and to be honest I felt insulted and upset that I had been spoken to in this way, particularly when I had tried to avoid the situation entirely. I am unsure if I should leave a complaint as I do understand where he was coming from but feel it was unfair to take his frustration out on myself.
The doctor who dealt with me was very respectful and made me feel very comfortable throughout my appointment thank you so much
The advanced nurse practitioner I saw was simply superb. I had watched her treat other patients before me with compassion and care. She explained my illness, treatment options and was reassuring throughout. She is a real credit to the NHS
Because you asked the question so I answered it.
Not enough space or chair (due to covid ) people in corridors. To many people booked in for the same time then people coming from A/E not good
I went to out of hours to be told at 11 30 at night that there was an hour and half waiting time may be longer as going down to one dr it was so packed I didn’t stay it was terrible the amount of people there
I have had seborrheic dermatitis for a year but don't consider it a long term physical condition.
