I have a history of recurrent UTIs and am on prophylactic antibiotics, which generally controls it. Occasionally I develop a full blown UTI and this is why I rang out of hours in the first place as I had started with symptoms in the early evening and I knew this needed treating. The person on the phone was helpful and advised a doctor would call me back, and this occurred around an hour and a half from my initial contact, around 8.30 pm I think. Having discussed my history and current symptoms, the doctor decided I needed to be seen, rather than issuing a prescription to my local pharmacy, the earliest appointment being 02.00 the following morning. I wasn’t happy about this, but I agreed to attend. I live alone and live some 12 miles from the OOH service and wasn’t keen on driving that far in the early hours. The staff on my arrival were pleasant, My appointment was about ten minutes later than appointed but this was not an issue to me, the doctor I saw was very kind and thorough about my symptoms, examining me and prescribing antibiotics and advice if the ones issued didn’t help after 3 days. All in all, I was there for about 25 minutes, including the few minutes I arrived before my appointed time. All Covid precautions were in use and advice visible.

Suggested improvements
I was disappointed that I had to attend an appointment, especially at such a late hour. I am of course aware the service is a 24 hour one. I have managed my condition with support from my GP for several years and in my opinion, a prescription to my local pharmacist would have sufficed. I am sensible enough to know what to do before any UTI gets out of hand, I had tested my urine as I would normally, and reported the outcome to the doctor over the phone, and I feel that she didn’t take into consideration the fact that I am able to understand and manage my condition. I understand that over a phone it’s not easy for them to decide whether I am sensible enough to trust or not. I am not complaining, as the doctor advised what she felt was appropriate and I attended as requested. It just felt to me, not urgent enough to take up an appointment at all, regardless of the hour.
