8th September 2021

I was advised by paramedics at an event to see my GP for antibiotics due to wasp stings that were becoming infected. My GP had no appointments available (10am) and advised me to contact the local 8 while 8 service and gave me the number. They took details and said i would be called back. A few hours later I was called and apologised re the wait and asked if I still needed assistance. I said yes please the situation had worsened so I was then called back later still (6.30pm). I was told there were no appointments until 2.15am and told to visit a pharmacist to see if i could get some steroid cream which may help. The pharmacist took one look said it was too late for cream and sent me straight to a&e. There the nurse said my arm was definitely infected quite badly and sent me to the urgent care dept. At approx 10.30pm i was seen by a dr who took one look and promptly told me there was no need to have wasted a&e resources etc or take up time in urgent care when my gp could have just prescribed me antibiotics over the phone or seen me instead. He was so busy assuming I hadn't tried other options and ranting that i shouldn't be there that he even tried to check my blood pressure by putting the sleeve on my infected arm causing me to well up with the pain. When he realised he apologised and used the other arm. And said he was frustrated because 80% of the patients he had treated that evening were unnecessary. As much as i sympathised, this was not my fault and to be honest I felt insulted and upset that I had been spoken to in this way, particularly when I had tried to avoid the situation entirely. I am unsure if I should leave a complaint as I do understand where he was coming from but feel it was unfair to take his frustration out on myself.

Suggested improvements
See above. More appointments needed at local drs in first instance.
