Review of St. Lukes Brooklands - Community Team written by a family member
31st December 2014

My late husband received care from the local health care team who were wonderful. However following his passing away at home (according to his wishes) I felt abandoned. He passed away in July 2014 and it has taken me until not to retem this to you.

To be fair this survey has come at the wrong time as I have not needed in depth care yet but, I have had exemplary care from the person I work with at present and I do not want our strong working relationship tarnished in any way. Suffice to say that when I was a 'carer' to someone who died in 2003 I (as a carer) had some disgusting and uncompassionate treatment metered out to me. This reverberated on the patient as their attitudes caused me far more stress than the patient. It added to an already heavy burden. Consequently I am apprehensive about attitudes should I ever become vulnerable and dependent. Of course my family know my thoughts but, unless you have walked 'my path' I do not expect them to totally understand. Nor have I done nothing about trying to get improvements. I've worked with caring societies and slowly messages are getting through. I find that I have not been alone in my agonies. I cannot suggest improvements until I have tested the system but so far - excellent. I am not writing this to 'get it off my chest' - I've been told this as well! My experiences spanned from 1999-2003 - All done if you are working toward 'great care' you need to know. I do note that more attention to staff attitudes is being included in new statute.

This is a very difficult time for us and just having the support and contact numbers are so helpful our nurse Suzzi is always there to help contacting GP and other agencies. I do not feel I am on my own. It is a shame that the beds at the hospice has been decreased more funding should be sought by government.

A feeling of reassurance, not that we were being told what to do, but we were being guided with possible options and support.
