People explained things clearly so that I knew what was happening no window, no fresh air too warm

Review of Ward 11
11th January 2014

I was wheeled up from A+E on my trolley, where I discovered that I did not have a bed, as there had been a breakdown in communication between the two departments. I was told that I would have to wait in the corridor for a short time, which I did not mind, as I understand that these things happen. The only annoyance I had was that the sister on the ward was talking about me, only a very short distance from where I was, saying such things as 'well she will just have to wait'. At no point did she come and explain the situation or apologise etc. Once I was in my room I had a very good standard of care. All the nurses that looked after me where hard-working and friendly. The same can not be said of my experience in A+E, where the nurse that was looking after me was exceptionally rude and did not care in the slightest that I was in extreme pain. I was left in agony for 8 hours due to the fact that it was believed I might have had a reaction to morphine in the past. I would not have cared had they been able to find me an alternative analgesic that was effective against the pain, however every time I asked the nurse if I could be given something else she just looked at me in disdain. She got irate when I would move, although I was unable to sit still because of the pain. She seemed to think that she did not need to communicate with words and that a steely look would be enough to convey the fact that she needed me to do something. Unfortunately the ability to read facial expressions and body language is lost when you are rolling around in agony, and therefore it would probably be easier if she would just explain in plain English in the future. I would not want to be looked after by this nurse ever again, nor would I like to think of her looking after one of my relatives. I do not know why she chose to go into a caring profession when she simply does not care!

The service could be more efficient. Everyone gets a wrist band with their details so could you save time and money and make care delivery quicker by having a system to manage all the standard questions that are asked at least 15 times by everyone involved in your care and sometimes twice or three times by the same person. I'm sure the questions are important but if you had a traffic light type system on the wrist bands it would be easy for every service provider to see at a glance if the patient was anything other than straightforward . The questions were: Date of birth Any fillings or crowns Any jewellery Any past operations Are you on any medication Are you allergic to anything What's your name I thought it strange but when my 15 year old son questioned it, I thought I should raise it as there must be a better way. It also appeared to us that there seemed to be so many people involved in the process that there must be a more efficient way forward which would speed up service delivery and reduce the pressure on staff. The staff were all great and some especially good, so thank you to all of them. The hospital is also great. How lucky we all are

My infant son was seen quickly and we were given excellent attention and reassurance. Having a separate children's waiting room with toilet was wonderful (maybe could be a bit cleaner - the toys were a little dirty).

The waiting time was good. The staff treating me, including reception, nurses, technicians and x ray staff were polite, friendly and considerate at all times. However, from what I overheard of others, this was not always the case. At no time did I hear anyone being rude but at times non clinical staff did speak to or assist another patient in a way I would not have found helpful. For example, my husband had to hold the door open for someone on 2 walking sticks when the staff dealing with her were right there and actually told her "just push the door"!
