Review of Ward A2 written by a patient

I was sent to Bassetlaw for induction due to DRI being closed. I could not be more pleased with the experience I had there. I was induced and ended up having a c section. From the moment I arrived at the labour ward I was taken care of, as was my husband. We had a lovely room and fabulous midwives who listened to us, got to know us and supported us throughout. Thank you to Ronnie and Julie. The staff that supported me during the section were second to none. I was shaking with fear and they helped me every single step of the way. Hearing my little boy cry for the first time will be a moment I never ever forget. We were allowed to stay in recovery for a long time which was wonderful. The staff on ward A2 were just fantastic and looked after me when I had a fainting episode. I cannot fault my experience. Thank you to all at Bassetlaw, you are all amazing. If I am lucky enough to be gifted baby no 2, we will be back.

GOOD. Care taken by all staff (A&E and all ward shifts) to make me comfortable. NOT SO GOOD. Information transfer between all relevant staff must ensure they are aware when medicine changes are made. This will avoid a patient being discharged with the wrong strength tablets, as was my experience. This was realised quite quickly by telephone resulting in my husband having to return to the hospital to exchange tablets and obtain a revised discharge letter.

Staff were excellent. Organisation was a bit poor, ran out of cooks balloons, had to phone up a lot to be seen with no expectation setting when ward was busy. Amber the midwife was fantastic. Calm throughout and fun to talk with.

I was admitted into A&E and being a Sunday I did not find the quality of staffing to the same level of that during the week, I did not feel confident with the level of Dr,s knowledge. My canula had been put in by the ambulance crew and when treatment commenced I could tell it was not correctly fitted as the drugs did not go into my vein fully but entered the tissue. I had to bring this to their attention as they did not appear to notice or listen to me when I said it was wrong. The Ward was very good, clean and well staffed and the food was plentiful, perhaps a little too generous, did we need snacks and biscuits and meals? The Ward was excessively warm and staff were constant complaining of the heat, could coolers not be provided. Patients need to know who is who on a Ward, who is in charge and who does what, its difficult to know who is running the ward, yes, we are told people,s names but are they a nurse, a sister, etc is anyones guess. Discharge was excellent, the nurse running this was a real dynamo and was able to chase up my prescription which was incorrect, her efficiency was amazing.

Throughout the latter part of my pregnancy I found out I had cholestasis, meaning I had to visit A2 regularly for monitoring of my baby. Every visit I found the midwives to be friendly helpful and very informative on the issues we faced. namely Adele, she was brilliant with myself and my little boy who I had to bring with me, making me feel very comfortable and at ease throughout the process. And again Jenna was also great with myself and my little boy, making it very easy to attend and have monitoring done whilst trying to look after out little boy.

As the hospital was obviously very busy during my initial stay, I spent some time in the A&E Holding Area / ATC and appreciated the professionalism of the staff and excellent condition of the rooms/beds (maybe enhanced because these were smaller areas) I was moved late afternoon (Wed) into C1, next to the nurses station as I was told that was the only bed. The nurse in charge in the afternoon and other staff members were all very nice, polite and busy. These were back on the following morning and were equally as good. In fact I gave a student nurse from Sheffield Uni a brief written appraisal for her records as she showed compassion, care and professionalism, in a calm manner. I was not so taken by the night staff on Wed evening. I felt that the level of noise and general chit chat at the nurses station, at times, was excessive. The patient next to me, (only 10mts from the nurses station) appeared to be ignored at times, despite choking and being sick. I had to draw attention to him on a couple of occasions thinking he was choking to death. Admittedly he was a difficult patient at times but if he could not be heard by the staff at the nurses station then I believe it was because people were distracted “typically by using their mobile phones from what I could see”. My constructive comments for the night team are. Please keep unnecessary “rowdy banter” at the nurses station to a minimum (or at lease quiet) as it is not a working shift for patients. Please keep general noise levels low where possible at the nurses station. If smart phones are allowed, then please use these at break times only.

The above scores and ratings relate to the care provided after 9 am on a day in mid April. The care and attention was faultless - we were monitored regularly and kept well informed. The midwife and the student midwife were reassuring, calming, caring and absolutely professional. This is in absolute contrast to the care received from the staff on the previous shift. We'd been told they weren't busy and so the lack of care cannot be explained by a lack of resource. The midwife and her colleagues were focussed on the K2 system only rather than any compassion for my wife. Of particular concern is the issue of 'fresh eyes'. This is simply not working at night. The staff see it as an administrative task and not an important one. Several times I watched in shock as 'fresh eyes' came in and completed the forms on screen without looking at any data. On one occasion, the other member of the team asked the midwife what times she should record - and entered three different times for fresh eyes when in fact she had not even been in the room. This approach of focussing on being seen to do the job is unacceptable.

Review of Therapy Outpatient Clinics (BDGH) written by a patient

My physio with Richard was excellent. He is extremely professional but listens. I required several sessions following arm surgery. This has led to a good prognosis. Six months post op and I can see light. Thanks to Richard for pushing me with home exercise. My appointments were on time and I never felt rushed. He always had time to check how much improvement I had made myself.

Not to tell the impatient they can go home and then tell them they have to stay in Make discharge quicker waiting for tablets is a nightmare when your elderly grandma want to go home
