I first met Mr Carmichael at the Fitzwilliam Hospital having been referred to him for an ankle fusion. He explained that my operation wasn't at all straight forward and would need to be done by himself at Peterborough City Hospital. His wealth of knowledge, experience and confidence made me feel at ease straight away. I needed my existing metalwork removed prior to an ankle fusion for complex trauma being done. Mr Carmichael was excellent at explaining each procedure prior to me being admitted and put me at ease before both surgeries with his calm, knowledgeable and "can do" mannerism. After surgery he came to my bedside and fully explained what had been done and answered any questions I had in a relaxed way. All follow up appointments were done by himself and everything was explained so that I easily understood. I found him to be a very down to earth guy who is obviously an excellent surgeon and I would have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending him to anyone. In a nutshell, he gave me my life back. Thank you Mr Carmichael!

A good surgeon needs to do more than be technically capable. They should exude confidence, listen to the patient, consider alternatives, engage the patient in decision making and put any risks or adverse aspects into perspective. Mr Carmichael succeeds on all counts. My surgery was of course routine to him, but a one off for me. As a patient I presented a specific and unusual anaesthetic challenge and this too was handled sensitively and efficiently by Mr C and the anaesthetist. I am likely to need a further op in due course and have no hesitation in working with this surgeon. And finally, I am in less pain and more mobile than I had anticipated. Put another way, I couldn’t have done that without him.

When I first had a consultation with Mr. Carmichael, I was in absolute agony and of the mindset that I would be like that for the rest of my life. I used to go running 5 or 6 times a week and absolutely loved pushing myself every time, but had got to the point where it hurt to stand , let alone walk. After consultations and X-rays and a lot of straight talking and reassurances I have had both feet operated on. Mr. Carmichael is very thorough in explaining what needs doing, possible problems and aftercare. If I have had any problems it’s never too much trouble for him to listen and explain and that meant a lot. I can’t express enough how much Mr. Carmichael has changed my life and that is not an exaggeration. He has given me my freedom back of being able to walk pain free again and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing foot surgery. I will be forever grateful for his expertise.

Mr Carmichael has a very good professional manner. He listened to what was wrong with my ankle and made a thorough examination, with scan and x-ray. I was able to make a fully informed decision about having surgery. He made sure I was aware of the possible negative outcomes as well as the positive. Discussing all scenarios in a way I could understand. At all stages he has answered my questions and made me feel confident in his ability as a surgeon. Would happily recommend him to others.
