Mr Akrawi operated on my knee in November 2020 at the Tunbridge Wells hospital, performing a total knee replacement, and I am very happy with the result. I found Mr Akrawi to be caring, explaining everything I needed to know before the operation, and I appreciate his seeing me afterwards informing me that all had gone well. I now have had two follow-up appointments, including the six months appointment. Again Mr Akrawi gave me excellent care and feedback which I found very reassuring. I am very grateful and very happy indeed with my new knee.

I had a total right knee replacement which was conducted by Mr Akrawi. I was impressed with his extensive briefing of what was involved, the risks and the benefits. The operation went off without a hitch: I chose not to be conscious while the operation was conducted but woke in time for the final closing. Mr Akrawi was able to demonstrate the degree of flexibility of the new knee joint minutes later: impressive! Recovery was complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic so there was no group physiotherapy and I had to make do with written instructions and whatever motivation I could muster. The period before I was fully mobile was therefore extended somewhat but I can now walk more than a mile and a half and climb stairs unaided. I have demonstrated remotely that I can straighten my leg completely and flex it more than 90 degrees. Mr Akrawi has seen photographic evidence of this and seems pleased with my efforts and his handiwork. I am extremely grateful for his skill and care.

Mr Akrawi is a very professional and caring surgeon. From meeting him in sept 2019 for a consultation and MRI scan review to Feb 5th for a operation for a cartlage removal and other work was a pleasure to be under his care and guidance. I mentioned the first meeting in sept 2019 well the MRI Scan hadn't been sent alas a second meeting in november and still no scan was sent. Finally 23rd dec my third meeting and hooray the scan had turned up. From then on After mr Akrawi 's diagnosis and what seemed forever waiting he put forward for an op on my knee for 5th feb 2020. Before during and after the op his only concern is his patients welfare. Visiting you before after the op in the ward.he is a great surgeon and he always makes you feel as if your his your friend. I believe Mr Akrawi in his field of work as a surgeon will be top of his line of work in not many years to come. Good luck to him.

I received a total right knee replacement (and patella resurfacing) in February 2020, by a team led by Dr Hawar Akrawi at Pembury Tunbridge Wells Hospital. I am 66 years old. He is acting as a locum for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in order to relieve pressure on knee replacement waiting lists. I was asked if I would like to transfer from the long list of another consultant to Mr Akrawi. We met and I was very happy indeed to do this. Mt Akrawi is clearly a consummate professional in that he is not forced to show off his knowledge for its own sake. He simply relates this very deep knowledge and skill to the individual and the individual injury, showing what can be done surgically (and, vitally, through ongoing work via post op physio and exercise) to maximise the value of knee replacement and therefore the quality of the patient’s life. He does not downplay the brutality of this process. It hurts and the patient needs to know this. His leadership of the surgical team was apparent and hugely impressive, particularly given that the patient can now, as the operation is conducted under epidural, hear everything that is going on. I asked to bring a KIndle in with me. Mr Akrawi agreed to this (‘why not ?’) but in fact it was far too interesting to actually listen in (including the sawing and hammering). The professionals who have seen the op scar have been unanimous - ‘a work of art’. I hope that it remains at least a little visible when I get into shorts for the summer. Mr Akrawi came to see me on the night of the operation on the ward. In my discharge notes, it said that I would see him for the 6 week check. The ward asst said that this would not actually happen – this check would be with a registrar. She was wrong – Mr Akrawi did this personally and in great detail, including checking for another linked injury. He will see me again in 3 months’ time to check again. This is a highly personal service from a hugely skilled and senior surgeon. And, not unimportantly, a very nice man. I consider myself completely fortunate to have been put on his list. I am lucky and thankful and, now, 9 weeks post op, am out for a dawn hour in the woods with my big young dog.
