Hawar Akrawi completed my knee replacement when no one else was prepared to undertake the long operation. The operation was very successful after six weeks complete painfree mobility. The surgery has given me my life back. A skilled and caring surgeon.

At 72 years of age, with a knee that was badly injured / reconstructed 45 years ago and with painful arthritis making normal walking impossible (forcing me to abandon my golf passion), I was desperate for a solution . . . yet very wary of major surgery. After a succession of investigative appointments with various doctors and with my cardiologist looming over my shoulder, I was finally introduced to Mr Akrawi in the Pembury NHS hospital. From the offset, Mr Akrawi earned my respect with his competent manner and clear communication. I overcame my rather nervous attitude towards the operation and entered the process. From the point where Mr Akrawi and his team met me on the day, I was impressed with his leadership of the team and the respect they showed him. They all buzzed around like clockwork and before I knew it, I was afloat on a cloud with the vague impression of an electric saw at work nearby. Then, there I was in the recovery room, feeling just dandy (awash still with some happy drugs). Back in the ward for a few days, well looked after through my haze by a happy bunch of nurses (and the wonderful physio Emma). Now mid October 2020, 3 weeks after the operation, I am exceptionally happy with the state of my knee. Sure there has been pain and disturbed sleep. To be expected. My heartfelt thanks to Mr Akrawi, who conducted everything and kept my mind at rest. If you are looking for a knee man, look no further!

Mr Hawar Akrawi wasn't my original surgeon but took my case on during what can only be explained a very disruptive year due to Covid19 at short notice and I am so grateful to him for doing so. I met him on the same day as my pre-op(10.09.2020) and straight away thought he was very thorough, informative and competent in explaining to me about what he was going to do and all the risks that could be involved in my knee surgery. I thought it was very refreshing to speak to a medical person that didn't say my injury was due to my age as so many do which I really liked about him. We were in a tiny room and it was so hot but not once did he rush through anything or mention the heat showing how professional he is, he also apologised for not being able to shake my hand. I had the op a week later on 18th September, he came to speak to before i had the op and then again in recovery where he showed me the images that had been taken during surgery and explained what he had done and that it all went well. I saw him again later that day before I went home which I didn't expect , he asked if i was okay and had I managed to have a little walk and advising me I might have some pain in the next couple of days and what to take if I did but I never(shows what a good job he did).To me this was such a personal touch especially as he must have been so busy, he comes across as if nothing is too much for him and i think he must go that extra mile with all his patients. I think this shows what a genuine, very caring person he is. I saw Mr Akrawi 3 weeks after my op and he was very welcoming, very polite and apologetic because he still couldn't shake my hand. He checked my knee and said I was doing well as I didn't need my crutch. Once again he was very informative, drawing a diagram of my knee, this made it so clear for me to see what had been wrong which led to the injury, we took a look at the images from the op as I said I didn't really see them clearly on the day of the op as I didn't have my glasses on. He asked me if I had any questions but I was happy about everything because he explained it all so very well. He then showed me the next exercise I needed to do, asked if I had the use of any equipment which would aid my knee recovery, he advised swimming, rowing, going on a cross trainer would be good but definitely not running at all. He arranged for me to have the stitches trimmed and a last appointment to be made in 9 weeks time bringing me to the full 12 weeks he had advised the process would be. Then the bomb shell he was leaving in 2 weeks so it wouldn't be him I saw, what a loss for the Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone Trust.!! I would highly recommend Mr Hawar Akrawi for any surgery you need, he is such a charming caring person and Leeds will be better off for having him there. I would just like to say a huge"Thank YOU" to him and his team for taking the horrible pain I had for 76 weeks before i had my op away. Take Care and Good Luck. X.
