Jonathan Behar became a consultant at Guy's and St Thomas' in 2021. He qualified from the Royal Free and UCL Medical School with a distinction in medical sciences in 2006. He completed general internal medicine and cardiology training in North London. He trained in electrophysiology and cardiac device implantation at the Barts Heart Centre, London. Jonathan completed a PhD at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London. This work investigated the role of advanced cardiac imaging in cardiac resynchronisation therapy. It also led to the co-invention of a patented software platform which fuses MRI and X-rays in real time. It was nominated for a European Heart Rhythm Association Innovation award in 2017. Jonathan has written over 80 peer reviewed papers and continues to presents his work internationally. He has co-directed several international cardiology meetings. After completing his cardiology training, he spent 2 years as a locum consultant at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals before taking up his permanent position at Guy's and St Thomas'. Jonathan has a passion for addressing unmet clinical needs through translational and innovative solutions. He was an NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur Fellow and recently led a team which digitised pre-operative consent for patients undergoing cardiac procedures. This work won the Royal College of Physicians Digital Award for Excellence in Patient Care 2021.
I had a phone consultation with Dr Behar in late October 2022, as a second follow-up consultation and after a heart scan, after originally going to St Thomas's A&E (the best, I think, thanks to several family experiences) because earlier this year I fainted while waiting at a bus-stop, seemingly without reason. I think he has a great manner: friendly and knowledgeable. As I now feel completely fine, I didn't want to waste his time, but he nevertheless went through all the possible symptoms of possible causes; possible future treatments, etc. I think anyone being looked after him would be in safe hands, although he was rather scathing about complementary medicine. By the way, I'd love to see this country move to an insurance-based health system like those used across Europe. Germany, Austria and France seem to have excellent systems. Despite the skill and dedication of most of the medical staff, the NHS system is clearly ludicrously top-heavy with wasteful management. And in far too many cases NHS midwifery sounds grim.

Dr Behar was very clear at explaining my diagnosis and potential treatments. He listened to my input and concerns and reassured me with empathy and factual information.

I was very happy with my telephone appointment with the doctor. He listened carefully to what I said and I felt confident he was fully aware of my case notes.

I had been feeling lethargic and was having breathing problems which I had just put down to old age but my daughter who is also a doctor insisted I go to A&E which I did I must add under duress. My blood pressure and pulse rate were apparently extremely dangerously low. As soon as my problem was diagnosed I was sent to ressus and then Dr Behar visited me on the Coronary care ward. He explained the need for a pacemaker to be fitted and within 2 hours I was undergoing surgery. Throughout the procedure (Under local anaesthetic) Dr Behar gave me a brief running commentary as to progress. My experience of the entire event could not possibly have been any better.

I highly recommend Dr Behar. He is extremely professional, attentive and really listened to my concerns. He made me feel at such ease and was extremely patient with all my questions. Would definitely recommend him to anyone in need of cardiology care/treatment.
