We arrived in the Day Surgery Unit not knowing the procedure. It was so busy wehad to sit on a window cill ledge outside in the corridor. My daughters name was called and was shown through to a other room. At no point was I informed of the procedure. My daughter then disappeared while I was waiting in the waiting room. After 45 minutes I had to ask the receptionist what to expect. I was then told that I would receive a phone call 40 minutes prior her leaving the hospital. 4 hours had past and I heard nothing. I eventually asked a nurse if she new anything about my daughter. She came back andd informed me that she had had her surgery and was in recovery. The communication was very poor to say the least.

No complaints about the staff, facilities, cleanliness and food, however I do have the following observations Lack of communication once I was on the ward as to what would be happening with me ( when I could sit up, get out of bed, expect to see a doctor etc) Having lights on over each bed during the day seemed a bit wasteful. In addition being able to turn off the light yourself would have been useful as lying in bed I was constantly staring at the light. When I was given the okay to go home, I was supplied with 4 overnight bags and asked to contact the suppliers myself as the hospital had not been able to do this. I tried this and was referred to the prescription service, they then said that I needed to contact the hospital to find out the exact bags that I would need. Contacted the ward, explained the situation and was told that the suppliers would be contacted. Hopefully this has happened and the nurse didn’t get distracted by her normal tasks. I also don’t know how long I keep my leg bag on or whether that needs to be changed on a regular basis as well

I was in A&E, E1 and E2 wards. The hospital environment was bright, clean and welcoming with plenty of bedside space. My care was very good - the hospital staff were kind ,friendly and professional. I really liked the food and the choice was good. The tea man was very friendly and always brightened my day with a friendly smile. I was very impressed with the endoscopy department - clean, colourful and very friendly staff. I was mostly in E2 ward. The male bathroom and toilets don't have enough shelf space so had to resort to using the tops of the bins as well. I have a stoma so shelf space is particularly useful for the additional items I have. One bathroom (Room 87) was not cleaned for a few days - I guess this was because it may have been occupied when the cleaner was due to visit. The flushes on the toilets werent adequate or not properly working so often had to remain in the toilet and attempt a second flush. The shower in room 87 was difficult to use without using hands as the bracket holding the shower head didn't hold properly. Apart from issues with the bathrooms and toilets which are easily fixed my stay was a very positive one - QA hospital is for me an excellent hospital with very dedicated and caring staff. Thankyou :-)

Review of G9 written by a patient
12th June 2019

I was admitted onto G9 after having been assessed in the React and Day Care unit needing attention to a clotted fistula and subsequently dialysis. Because I have a long standing active ileostomy, I was worried sick that it would cause problems in the shared 4 bed ward, being a long way away from a suitable sink and toilet facilities. As it was I had to depend on a nurse to help me on a couple of occasions to empty the contents into a male urinal which resulted in an embarrassing smell and some mess and residual soiling of the bag and clip leaving me feeling dirty. I had previously arranged to pay for a bed on G5 with the approval of the surgical team, where I would have the use of a wash basin and toilet but because of problems with the surgery needing further intervention I was moved to G9 in a shared ward. I do understand very well the problems of fulfilling specialised treatment on a private ward but I believe that a single room with a washbasin close to hand and a commode would have been a good compromise and was wondering whether this could be arranged in the future to ensure some privacy and more dignity. Sorry about the long rambling nature of this communication but hope you don’t mind my having explained the situation to you as I feel very strongly about this. Thank you.

I had an appointment in timely fashion plus a phone call reminder. I arrived in good time and appointment was 20minutes late but I understand that not everything runs true to time. I heard my name called out but noticed that some patients had difficulty hearing above the general chattering. The general appearance of the waiting area and scan room was clean and uncluttered. Everything ran smoothly one reason being the information provided prior to appointment I.e. Advice on clothing and the requirement to complete an information form.

Natasha was excellent - really attentive and calm, especially when we ended up needing a cesarean. She was also really helpful when Isabella was born with helping me express and get skin to skin time. Thank you Natasha! X

Review of E2 written by a patient
11th June 2019

I was really satisfied with my experience and I would like to thank everyone involved for helping me get back to full health. I had a gall-bladder removal operation and it was turned around quickly and efficiently. I was given my own room as I am transgender, but my hospital records still had my previous name on file. Everyone treated this with respect. If there was one improvement, it would be surrounding patient records, before moving back down to Gosport, my patient name was Katie Joell at my local NHS surgery at Studholme Medical Centre, Ashford, but for some reason, my old records are all NHS QA Hospital have on file. Not sure how it hasn't all updated, but if that could be updated that would be much appreciated. On the whole though, everyone was very nice, the surgery has helped me feel much better and I cannot thank the surgeon enough for carrying out the operation and relieving the pain i had, that was unbearable. Thank you NHS! This feedback relates to staff on E1, E2 at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

All staff and midwives were very helpful caring and friendly. I couldn’t not fault them at all. Always made sure I was ok. The only nuisance was waiting for a doctor which took hours. Other than that was a good experience.
