I have just spent 4 nights in hospital having a stent fitted as part of the treatment for a kidney stone. Having spent 60 years in good health, I had not stayed in hospital before. The care I received from all the dedicated professionals at Whipps Cross was exemplary. They were fantastic. Their patience was never-ending and they really cared. My one regret is that I cannot remember all their names. However, I'd like to particularly thank the staff in the High Dependency Unit where I spent a night, with (unpleasant) catheter inserted, connected up to equipment monitoring my every move looking at a previously unknown irregular heartbeat. Sabeer Ramjany and colleague were kind and gentle and so reassuring at an emotionally low point in my life. Taking over from them, Inge (a nurse from Lithuania) continued the reassurance and care. She was so good with me. Her colleagues were great too, particularly the male senior nurse who so deftly whipped out the hated catheter! Throughout my stay, consultants and doctors answwered my questions and explained procedures in detail with care and great courtesy. I was never left wondering. I spent two nights in Sycamore Ward, particularly with Ann-Marie and team. I was forever impressed by the stoicism and endless patience displayed by the nurses. These traits were mixed with kindness, warmth and humour. I understand now more than ever how these nurses are the backbone of the NHS. Enduring government austerity, PFI rip-offs and the impact of Brexit on nursing recruitment, the NHS must continue to provide the high degree of care that it is renowned for. It truly is a modern Wonder of the World.

I had a miscarriage and was at your hospital where I was registered. The care I received in the EGU was amazing However since then I have received letters regarding up and coming appointments. I have called the "Purple team" to inform them. I didn't attend my 12 week scan as it happened the day before, I now have a letter about my next scan - yet what I can't understand is how it is impossible for you to update the system. Yet just send me reminders that are heart breaking. Not to mention NO ONE ever answers the phone... I have called now 9x and it just rings. ... how am I supposed to inform you or cancel an appointment if no one picks up the line? If you have a help line answer it - and if someone miscarries at your hospital, don't keep sending them appointments.

I fell over and was taken by ambulance to Whipps Cross Hospital Emergency. Checked in by the ambulance people and then taken to sit in a large reception area. I had badly damaged my forehead and nose which were bleeding but the ambulance man put a dressing on my forehead which stopped the bleeding but my nose was still dripping. I was eventually called in by a nurse who looked at my forehead and immediately said that it was too deeply cut to stick. Nurse Alison phoned someone and arranged for them to look at my forehead. She took me through to the section and sat me down and said that someone would come and find me. I waited a short while and was taken into another room where the doctor looked at my forehead and said that Alison was very experienced and was quite right and it would have to be stitched. I was not happy about having it stitched, being a coward, but Ammar said that he was from MaxFax section and that it would be OK. If I was really worried I could stay in and have a general anaesthetic to have it done but I thought it best to get it over. He gave me several injections and very carefully did the stitches. Everyone who has seen what he did have said how well it is done and he could not have explained what he was doing any better. The stitches have been removed and I think there will eventually be very little scaring. Nurse Alison came back for me and took me to the ENT section where the doc looked at my nose but said it was too swollen to do anything and I would have a phone call to come back to the hospital to look at it. I went back the following week and wast old I had 3 alternatives and was booked in to have my nose manouvered back into place under general anaesthetic the following Friday. However I decided that it would be better to wait a while and then arrange to have it done as a "nose job". I phoned the folowing morning to cancel the booking. However I then received a letter telling me where to go on Friday and phoned again to check the operation had been cancelled. Someone phoned me today to say I had to have another test but I told her that I had cancelled and she said she would check this had been put through. The over all treatment by the nurse and the Dr Ammar was terrific. My only criticisms are that whilst I was sitting waiting to be seen my nose was still bleeding and I was running out of tissues. I was rescued by another patients who very kindly went to the cloakroom and came back with some paper towels for me which was a great help. I was also at the hospital for approx 6 hours. The stitches took about 45 minutes and most of the rest of the time was just sitting and waiting to be seen.

Review of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) - WXH written by a family member

Concerted staff effort was great, the nurses tried hard to be caring and reassuring. There are possibly two negatives, firstly we did get conflicting information on treatment one doctor saying one thing then being contradicted by another. Secondly one nurse was very rude when I actually picked up the patient's drug folder believing it was the diary, this did not detract from the standard of care but is an unnecessary issue in an emotional atmosphere Sorry but food was substandard but a less important matter.

Review of Emergency Department - WXH written by a patient
13th February 2018

I went to Whipps Cross A and E on Sunday 11 Feb around 615, and was very grateful for the attention I had there, from all those I saw there -starting with reception and registration. The only point I recommend for improvement: some of the number indicators were not working, although I was told to listen for my number being called, I did not here it above the other noises ( announcements, patients on phones etc.) fortunately another patient, quite soon, saw my number and told me it had been called The person in Minor injuries, and Mario the nurse practitioner, were very attentive in examining me, and explaining their conclusions. Thanks to all concerned.

Review of Plane Tree Urology Clinics - WXH written by a family member
12th February 2018

I fill in the information for my husband. I brought him in to Plane Tree day surgery unit at 7am this morning. To be told I couldn't stay with my husband because I was not his carer or a translator. I was or so told I couldn't sit in the Urology clinics waiting area as it would be busy with a clinic today. Was told to take a paper with the wards phone number on and to phone in 3 to 4 hours to see how things are going. My husband Mr Allen lane was very nervous about today proceedings, special as he was only told two weeks ago he has cancer. He terrified about this surgery and I feel I have let him down as I was not there for him in his time of need, to support and to care of him.

Review of Silverthorn Centre written by a patient

On 9 February arrived at 12.30 for a blood test and was about to register when a nurse came out to say that they were closed. I pointed out that the website said they closed at 1.00. She answered that they close at 12.25 and was about to lock up. I left and the door was locked behind me. As I left 2 people turned up but were unable to gain access. I am sure that this not the kind of service that you intend to provide.

The staff on Elizabeth ward treated my dad with dignity and respect, kindness, compassion, patience and understanding both nursing staff and doctor could not have done more for him. They are all wonderful, kind. They also made sure I was okay and I understood what they were saying. Thank all very much.
