My review is about the Sainsbury Ward at St Marks Hospital. I was admitted for 6 nights following major surgery. The private room was of satisfactory standard, nothing to shout about. The view of Wembley Stadium is great. The food was of good standard too and that's about it. The basic facility of going private was not really met. The room is very basic with en-suite. It can do with being upgraded. the walls were bare with 1 picture frame that looked very dated. My main disappointments were:
1. The television in the room didn't work and was eventually replaced 3 days later. I had to fiddle around with the arial (after having surgery) just to get a bit of fuzzy reception on the TV. It made me very angry as this facility in the 21st century is standard. It took 3 days of complaining before they decided to replace the TV.
The staff in reception don't smile (look miserable) or even greet you (unlike other private hospitals I have been to). No welcome etc...
Some of the staff (HCA's) and nurses didn't have a clue about my treatment. Most of them didn't even want to check and measure my stool and urine samples as directed by the doctor. The stool and urine samples would stay in the bathroom for a day or so until I kept reminding the nurses that it needs to be checked and measured.
I just could not wait to get out of the place as I felt more ill in the hospital.
The room temperature control was not good......it was either too cold or too hot.
My Surgeon and doctors and specialist nurse are of excellent standard. they were brilliant as expected.
I have received the very best care from a very professional caring and compassionate staff. From initial diagnosis to surgery to chemotherapy I have always been given the very best care and attention. You have some amazing people working at this hospital.
Very good
Friendly, polite staff who are very welcoming and explain everything clearly.
Nothing to improve.
Very friendly staff.
Relaxing atmosphere.
The team is very supportive and provide the best care during the treatment.
Start timing for the treatment could be improved.
Nursing care - excellent. Surgeon and anaesthetist - excellent. Catering - great. Pharmacy - hopeless - was prescribed TTAs in morning but did not get from pharmacy until 6 pm - this delayed discharge.
St.Marks is a fantastic referral hospital and I can not praise the surgical team enough however the aftercare on the ward is not as good as I would expect. There are too many different staff often agency which does not provide good continuity of care. It often seems like a case of too many chiefs.
Some of the nursing staff have serious attitude deficiencies.
There is little consideration given to the patient in the care they are given which is frustrating especially when you are a patient who is best at knowing your condition.
The main "red army" nursing team however are fantastic and the bed manager / warm clerk Rita is a superstar!
I never felt that certain areas of the ward were particularly clean, especially the bathrooms and I often had to ask for the soap etc to be replenished.
Overall I would not be put off going back due to the expertise of the surgeons and experience in colorectal and intestinal disorders but it is a hospital I will go to and stay at under sufferance
