I am the mother of a young man who has been a patient on Althorp ward for over 2 years. He has a dual diagnosis of schizophrenia and substance addiction. The first year was spent juggling combinations of medication but finally in February 2020 it was decided to put him on clozeril as his symptoms were so distressing. He had however had a reasonable quality of life though staff struggled to engage him in activities , as he preferred outings with the family. Last year however because of the pandemic we were not able to visit and this combined with the effects of the clozeril meant he participated much better.
He has always spoken very warmly of the staff and when I was able to talk to them I felt the same. They seem genuinely caring and compassionate. In addition Dr Malik involved me in ward rounds and showed very detailed and kind interest and knowledge of my son. Dr Mayuri , principal psychologist also demonstrated similar care and concern and invited me to some sessions by myself.
There is a good range of activities catering for a wide variety of interests. Exercise opportunities eg basketball, walks and fitness training in the gym are provided. In addition there are groups run by the psychologists and OTs, some therapeutic, some more entertainment-based. Catering appears excellent and attention is given to physical ailments by a visiting GP.
The communal areas are very clean and the rural surroundings very beautiful.I
I am satisfied with the care I have been given, and was treated with dignity. The food and environment is very good. They had a lot of activities to help me keep myself distracted.
I am writing this email as care co-ordinator for a person who was admitted to Broomhill from a medium secure hospital.
The person was well supported at Broomhill, positive risks were taken to enable discharge to be considered when for many years this person was deemed to be not ready for discharge by different professionals.
The staff were kind and compassionate, they managed to engage the person in activities that were meaningful to them and after 3 years the person was ready for discharge.
The person was provided with different opportunities and learned new skills while being an inpatient at Broomhill.
Also regular visits to friends and family were supported.
As care co-ordinator I was always invited to CPA reviews which were held 6 monthly without fail.
The person has now been discharged and is doing really well in their local community.
Reason: "I feel lonely sometimes."
i think the hospital has showed good ability into getting me discharged
I'm a patient here the staff are extremely helpful and friendly I feel safe and relaxed.its extremely clean with good communal rooms which are nice and well equipped. The grounds are peaceful in beautiful settings I have escorted exercise and find the staff very easy to talk with they are very helpful and encouraging. We can't have visits because of covid but the staff are very caring and sensitive to our wellbeing.
I'm thankful to them and all they are doing
No inclusion in treatment planning, no follow up on any plans discussed at ward round, frequent staff changes and lack of experienced mental health HCA’s. It’s like a prison.
Well I wasn’t greeted by the manager just took into this room and wasn’t allowed to see his room .... the place looks lovely but most of the family and friends are complaining ... which isn’t good
