Review of Oral Surgery Seacroft (3852) written by a patient
14th February 2017

Although the staff were very polite and helpful, under obviously stretched circumstances, there were some things which could have been easily fixed, which staff were aware of, and which were very disappointing from a patient's point of view. The most important thing you need to do differently is to state clearly on the appointment letter exactly who the patient is going to see. I was told by letter that I would be seeing Dr A Kanatas. When I was taken through, a different member of staff introduced himself, (but crucially not his job or title), and said he worked for Dr Kanatas. It was not made clear to me even after I asked, at exactly what stage (if ever) Dr Kanatas would consult me. When I raised it with the staff member, he said inaccurate letters were a well known problem about which they had received numerous complaints. This must be put right - if you aware of a complaint then something has to be done about it surely? Secondly, there was a helpful clock diagram on the waiting room wall saying how far behind the dept was; it was showing it was on time, yet it was plain to see that there was an average of a 30 minute wait for everyone in the room. I had to wait 40 minutes. Why could that not be displayed on the wall to manage people's expectations? While I was waiting, someone turned up who had mistakenly come a whole month early for her appointment. She was told she could be fitted in today and, inexplicably, was seen within 10 minutes of her arriving. Thirdly, despite having had a full set of x-rays done at the dentists before I came, the hospital had no record of them. This meant a trip to the x-ray dept and a wait of a further 40 minutes. This may be the fault of the dentist of course; but it is a common issue of a completely un-joined approach to care within the NHS where a patient has to explain his circumstances to each clinician he sees, which I've felt often in my dealings with the NHS. These are small but crucial things that can be easily rectified. I look forward to your response. Kind regards, Jonathan Finch

My dentist had sent all the X-rays & information. If these had been looked at first before seeing the hospital dentist it should have shown I needed a scan. If the scan had been booked first then seen the hospital doctor a decision could have been made on one visit. Now I have to wait for a scan then the results to be sent to hospital & then an appointment to discuss prognosis. A visit could have been eliminated saving time, money & waiting.

Everything was great. Vicky gave me all the information I needed at every stage. She was very respectful and approachable, a model professional and very nice person.

Could be warmer especially during examinations and long waits between arrival, tests and seeing doctor in only a thin gown.

I can't say I can recommend, that is down to the Doctors, but if someone said they had to go then I can say it was really good, everyone was friendly and sympathetic to the situation. I was told at each stage what the next stage would be. I can't see how they could have done it any different. My circumstances might be different to others but being able to go through everything and have my results all on the same day was fantastic. I was lucky I had my sister as company because the second waiting area was ladies only, of which I'm also glad, but if you were really stressed it could be difficult waiting alone.
