Review of Emergency Care Centre SGH
12th July 2021

I first attended Princess Diana Grimsby hospital and was assessed after a short wait and moved into room 1 which was used by several staff popping in and out to use the computer. I was told I would be going to Scunthorpe hospital to the stroke unit to be assessed again. My bloods were taken at the initial assessment and I had a few hours wait in room 1 with 2 more doctors coming in briefly and asking questions afbout my condition. After several hours waiting I was taken by ambulance by 3 I assume paramedics who were extremely efficient kind and courteous towards me explaining what was going to happen on my arrival asking relevant questions completing forms and monitoring my blood pressure. I found this very reassuring. On arrival they took me straight through introduced me handing over relevant notes. I was seen immediately by who I assume was a consultant doctor Who asked questions asking me to explain my problems and perform relevant movements. He was very thorough and professional explaining to me what was going to take place. I was taken for a CT scan and again greeted by a very kind nurse. After being taken back to the stroke admittance room again I was seen again by the consultant who confirmed I had not had a stroke but had a facial palsy and went to great lengths and had the patience to explain clearly about the condition and why the medication was necessary and made sure that I took medication before being told I could leave and discharging me.

Suggested improvements
Perhaps a quicker ambulance transfer to Scunthorpe hospital or a little more information about my suspected condition by the Grimsby nursing staff but in general they looked very busy so perhaps under great work volume to cope with. Just a little worried while left I room 1 with no information being given to me by the staff.

Went in with chest pain waited 5 hours before I was actually assessed. I understand that staff are busy, stretched, tired and work long hours but seriously 5 hours!!! Not once did any staff member even come over to check I was ok while I sat in agnostics clutching my chest.

Suggested improvements
A quick check to make sure patients waiting are ok and not just left sat for hours on end. The attitude of some staff members needs looking at as some not all are quite rude.

After being on hold calling 111 for over 17 minutes I was given an appointment time. Got to a and e 15 minutes before the appointment time but the queue was out of the door. After waiting in the queue for 25 minutes got to the desk and booked in. Then waited about 45 minutes to initially be seen. Back in the waiting room for another hour seen by doctor. Back in the waiting room for another hour and half ct scan back to the waiting for another hour then seen by the doctor for results. Total wait time approximately 6 and a half hours. I completely understand that there are other patients to see and others that are more serious but surely there is a more streamlined way of dealing with patients. Having said all that the staff were excellent and although being extremely busy all were friendly and courteous.

Suggested improvements
Stream lining the services somehow.

Was sent by out of hours to a&e. Once seen after 2.5 hours- was told they couldn’t do anything for my son due to nature of suspected illness.

Suggested improvements
More seats. I am heavily pregnant and have a young child- I was incredibly tired and aching from having to stand at times.

Overall I was very happy with the care I received. The doctors and nurses I had contact with were kind, efficient and reassuring. However after my initial visit to the a&e department I was admitted to a day ward with no explanation as to why other than I needed to see another doctor, I felt that the communication as to why I was waiting to see another doctor could have been clearer as I spent the whole time worrying. The wait was also very long and myself and other patients were all waiting to see the same doctor who we found out also had other wards to visit.

Suggested improvements
Reduce waiting times, employ more doctors and nurses rather than overloading the ones you currently have. One poor nurse had her break at her desk so effectively did not get a break.

The department was busy but care and attention was paramount by the 4 separate people that I saw. The Doctor was excellent with a sense of humour but gave precise and easily understood answers to all my questions. He was particularly good at making me feel at ease without patronising me. I had a lot of concerns that he helped resolve. The triage nurse had a student in and both were respectful and very friendly. I had to have a X-ray and that was quick and easy also by respectful staff. The fourth person took my bloods and highlighted that I appear to have arthritis in my hands and gave me great advice. So all-in-all I had a top notch service, which felt much better than previous times that I attended SGH.

Suggested improvements
It was a little slow to get registered but otherwise the experience was good.
