Review of Pre-op assessment Outpatient Area written by a patient
6th November 2018

Outstanding care once again by the Urology nursing staff at QA. Utterly professional and understanding, completely put me at ease, I don't know how you do it. I would make no changes to the inside of the hospital. The staff are, and always have been, amazing. Outside however... arriving by car at 2pm for a 3pm appointment and I couldn't even get on site. Traffic was absolute chaos, queuing back up Southwick Hill Road towards Portsdown Hill and blocking the road. Against the odds, after a 45-minute 7-mile detour to go 800 yards, I did manage to make the appointment on time. I fully appreciate that the sheer quantity of vehicles trying to find somewhere to park at QA is an problematic traffic management issue. But one that needs to be addressed. Additionally, there are large 'No Smoking' signs around all the entrances to the hospital. All of them are ignored. Despite the availability of smoking shelters there is consistently a large number of smokers at all entrances to the hospital. The result is the need for clean-air-breathers to walk through a fog of rancid second-hand smoke to get in an out of the hospital. The most disappointing aspect is that there never appears to be anyone enforcing the No Smoking regulation. What is the point of putting the signs up and restricting smoking to a sensible location if it isn't going to be enforced? I would propose that a submission to Portsmouth City Council for a by-law for on-the-spot fines for those who transgress the regulations is imposed, in the interests of clean air and the health of all concerned. Hope this helps

Review of Pre-op assessment Outpatient Area written by a patient

I was seen very promptly and on my appointment time. Both nurses I saw were very friendly and informative. The only thing I can say as a criticism was that there was quite a lot to discuss and I had a further appointment scheduled one hour after the pre-op so we ran out of time really and had to end the consultation in rather a hurry - no fault of the nurse at all. The pre-op nurse had a couple of queries regarding the medication I was on and said she would speak to the anesthetist and get back to me which she did 2 days later.

Review of G5 (Private ward) written by a patient

Only criticism of room was the tv unit was archaic should be upgraded when spending £250 per night. There should be better liaison with the pharmacy I was told I could leave by my Consultant surgeon at approx 10.30am. My prescription finally arrived from the pharmacy just before 6pm. I'm sure you would agree this is unacceptable. My overal care at QA was second to none.

A & E rapidly reached the correct diagnois. Junior doctors had no knowledge of Impaired Glucose Tolerance as a prediabetic condition or as a factor in heart disease. They also relied heavily on text book descriptions of heart pain such as “weight on the chest”, “tightness in the chest” or “belt around the chest” and disregarded other abdominal pain and pain in the back. This made these people seem obstructive and difficult to communicate with.

Review of E2 written by a patient

I recieved the utmost care from all the staff at this hospital. Everyone was so kind and compassionate. The ward was spotless and everyone from Doctors, nurses, ward assistants and cleaners were absolutely lovely. My only very slight gripe was that I had to have my op aborted due to complications and wasn't told this for several hours later. I have nothing but utter admiration for the staff. They were all very kind.

I was treated very well by everyone, from reception, nurse, porter, theatre staff and the Doctors too. We parked well in the car park, always found a space. Charges were steep and maybe a weekly pass at a lower rate could be used....maybe there already is. The departments are spread out but signage is good and people happy to guide you. Excellent hospital with good care, thank you.
