Despite wanting a follow up appointment with the same doctor currently treating me (as suggested in your newsletter) I arrived to find I had been palmed off on a nurse practitioner. This wouldn't have been a problem however she knew nothing about me, hadn't even glanced at my record, and proceeded to totally disregard what I knew was wrong and the treatment the other doctors had put in place and decided it was something completely different. Even admitting she didn't know what the condition I have is. Despite the finger prick test telling her she was wrong she insisted she was right and went on to waste both my time and the sonographers at the hospital as she was proven wrong again. Not before telling me she wanted to put me on blood thinning medication over the weekend, that combined with the medication I take for my multiple sclerosis would have had disastrous consequences. So if you feel like taking your life in your hands or living dangerously, pay them a visit.

Many thanks for your comments. We take all feedback seriously and you will find information on our formal complaints procedure on our website. On this occasion we would disagree with some of your comments and would like to address these so our surgery is not misrepresented. Your were seen in an emergency clinic appointment. These apointments are extra appointments that are dealt with by our clinicians who are all well qualified and competant to deal with emergencies. On this occasion you were seen by a nurse practitioner. It is sad that you used the term 'palmed off', as many patients and all of our doctors respect our senior nurses and have complete confidence in their ability. Your notes are available to be read by the clinicans, and can be read in full when needed. We expect all of our clinicans including the doctors, to identify gaps in their knowledge and not mislead patients. In this instance, the nurse practitioner identifed a gap in her knowledge and then sought the advice from a doctor and practised in a safe way. The finger prick test you mention can help in the diagnosis of a blood clot, but this is not just a yes-no test and results have to be taken in context with the clincial picture. Therefore, by arranging for you to have a scan on the same day, you were given excellent care. If the scan was positive the medication would have proved necessary, as blood clots can cause potentially fatal consequences. We hope that you can appreciate that the care provided by our nurse practioner was not at all dangerous and she was acting in your best interests given the symptoms you discussed with her. If you would like to discuss this further please get in contact with surgery.

Wow. Rang up and a choice of same day appointments with Laura. Seen and sorted that made me feel better before the taking of tablets. 100/100.
