It has took just over a year to get a telephone appointment with my doctor! In the end my husband rang and demanded an appointment with her because I have been really unwell and I needed continuity of care to move forward. I’ve had appointments with a Nurse Practitioner or Paramedic and they want to do what’s already been done, which was pointless and wasting an appointment someone else could have. My husband shouldn’t have to demand an appointment. After more than a year I am finally getting somewhere. The triage nurse needs sacking she’s not qualified enough. On another occasion the receptionist relayed my symptoms and she said I still need to take more cold & flu after taking 3 different sorts for 3 weeks. I pushed for an appointment, which I had to attend at a different surgery, and it turned out I had an ear infection, sinus infection & throat infection! Need I say more?!

Suggested improvements
LISTEN TO YOUR PATIENTS WHEN THEY RING FOR HELP!! And employ someone qualified empty to make the crucial decisions of who gets treated or an appointment. When you are ill it’s hard enough, you shouldn’t have to fight to be cared for. I have found that the doctors & nurses I have spoken to about the difficulties I have had at the surgery they apologise profusely & said they get the same from everyone they talk to or see. I have had family members also have the same problem and have complained and the doctors & nurses say the same thing to them as well. To me it seems like a reception problem rather than a doctor problem. With all the delays a ridiculously extended appointment times the surgery should be doing more to their patients in the mean time. After all isn’t that what GP’s are for in the first place? To fill the gap so hospitals and out of hours aren’t over run. It’s GP surgery’s that have helped push up 999/111 calls & extended waiting times in A&E & minor injuries because people cannot get the care they need at their GP surgery.
