Review of Amber Ward written by a family member
13th December 2020

When a relative is first admitted it is also very scary for the person who has been caring for them. At the beginning I had no idea what was happening to my husband nobody told me what his treatment and care would involve. Unless I telephoned I heard nothing. I pointed this out at the family meeting and things took a turn for the better. Stella, the ward manager, apologised for the lack of communication and I was then kept informed plus Dr Alex Breton would ring me weekly to update me. You cannot imagine how much better this contact makes you feel, whether the news is good or not so good at least you know that the best is being done for your relative.

Suggested improvements
Perhaps a short meeting when your relative is admitted explaining what the procedure is would be advisable. I know the staff are busy but it needn't take more than five minutes or perhaps an explanation could be included in the information pack that we are given. It is a frightening experience not only for the patient but also for their relative as well.

I felt well treated by the friendly staff and enjoyed the course. In the present situation the online courses work well, as all sitting in a room together cannot be done at present.

Suggested improvements
Cannot think of anything at present.

Had a positive experience in the 136 suite. Nick was very kind and put me at ease. He explained everything to me and was very helpful. Unfortunately I didn’t have a very positive experience once transferred to ruby ward as most of the staff there weren’t great.

Overall, I have felt safe. I felt the staff were approachable, even if busy at times. No complaints about the food. During the day, if the multi-therapy room is closed, it would be good for more activities to keep patients mind active.

Suggested improvements
Cleaning of the bathrooms could be better. The toilet leaks. Maintenance could be improved.

My support worker is always kind to me, she makes sure I have what I need and she chats to me as I have no one else.

Suggested improvements
I wish I could see my support worker more, but I know she is a busy lady

Amber Ward Feeling listened and respected made a big difference to the experience of treatment and care. Mary (the receptionist), Stella (manager), and Ade (nurse) have been very helpful and supportive.

I felt that staff were very compassionate and very helpful in everything that I needed.

Suggested improvements
More structure to the day. Aside from meals and medication. A few more activities on the ward, especially for people who don't have leave.

It was a brief 2 week course on sleep and wellbeing, but there were some interesting points made and discussions between students and people running the course. The handout at the end of the course on how to improve sleep has a lot of very good pieces of advice in it.

Suggested improvements
With at present the courses being virtual, I think that the college does the best it can under the circumstances. It would be good to get more students to go on the courses, as I am sure it would be a benefit to them at this time.
