My husband was diagnosed with bowel chance and given months to live within 2 days of admittance to hospital. 2 weeks later he was admitted to St Catherine's Hospice to sort out his pain management. However, things went downhill very quickly and he died 4 weeks later.
He was pleased to be admitted to the Hospice having had the experience of his son dying in a Manchester Hospice some years earlier and he wondered what he had done to be so lucky to be admitted.to St Catherine's ! From the minute he went in to the minute he died he was looked after with care, tenderness, acceptance of all that had to be done for him personally.
The staff were there whenever he needed them and were totally honest with him, which is what he wanted. Everybody was also very kind to me and supported me totally. When de died I was able to stay with him with no pressure -I didn't want to leave him there . The Hospice has offered me lots of support since he died though I still find life very difficult without him. It is just over a year since he died but one of the things that helps me are the memories of his contentment and dignity during those last awful weeks. I thank the staff from the bottom of my heart.
Friendly and informed.
