Review of North London Community Stoma Nurse Team
28th July 2023

After major surgery, visits and support by the community stoma nurses was necessary. The nurses were friendly, professional, discussed whatever issues one raised and inspired confidence. Their support was reliable and they ensured that everything worked properly. Their advice and offer to take phone calls if necessary in the future was very reassuring. I was most grateful and thank them for all they did to help me.

There is much to take in when using a stoma bag for the first time. From my experience, repeating advice and instructions - sometimes even twice is not enough! Ensure the patient is clear which is the Personal Number on the Medilink order form. Explain that when an appointment is made, why they could be delayed so that planning a visit on the day ensures reduced anxiety or time wasting. Provide nurses with a towel or wet/dry wipes needed when they demonstrate procedures.

All of the staff that I have seen in the SALTS Team have been professional and courteous in their approach. Messages have been answered promptly and advice freely given. Solutions to problems have been quick and supplies provided in a timely manner. The SALTS Team members that I have dealt with have certainly made the surprise of getting a stoma a far less problematic experience than I envisaged.

Crohn’s disease Colostomy stoma

Suggested improvements
I am aware that my stoma nurses have been informed they may no longer have a clinic room. I am only 3 months post surgery, and the service from the stoma nurses is, and will always be, endlessly invaluable to myself. They have been an incredible support to me. Gill and Louise really are amazing. I have already struggled several times in the past with making appointments as they are unsure of being able to offer me an in clinic appointment. When I have come I have often had to move areas which isn’t acceptable. Having had this major surgery and a stoma introduced has been very hard to overcome, something I’m dealing with now everyday. To hear that there may no longer be a specific safe space to come for appointments has left myself very anxious and frustrated. Home visits are not viable to myself as I work full time, so this is not an option for me. I fear for others also who also use the service and in the future people In a similar situation to myself and the negative, distressing impact this will have. It is quite frankly appalling.

Stoma nurses are absolutely fantastic, treated me with total respect and also showed my wife how everything works and answered questions..

Only thing that could have been handled better was before my operation the stoma nurses were given the wrong name so I did not get to see them pre op.

My cancer was diagnosed in January 2022 and bladder & prostate were removed in July 2022. Therefore I have a stoma. The care I have received from the Bradford team has been exemplory with frequent phone calls to check on my condition and visits when necessary. Top marks !!
