When the service was unavailable excellent care was given. Unfortunately because the availability was not known until later in the day it was difficult to plan.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

Thank you for your feedback regarding notice of shifts to be provided. We will endeavour to look at ways of providing more notice of visits as the service develops further. Presently, the service is limited to booking shifts a day or a few hours ahead, due to the nature of the patients we are caring for and the patient’s condition can deteriorate within a matter of a few hours.

My husband died at home in dreadful pain as it was on a Sunday night and we could not get any help he was in pain for hours. I would like to say that he should have been taken into the hospice I will never forget how he suffered.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

Thank you for your feedback. It is imperative that patients who are poorly are attended to appropriately. Unfortunately, the problems encountered by you and your husband on the Sunday night, are associated with another service who did not attend to your husband as requested. We have fed back to the other service to inform them of your feedback.

Better care could not be improved, not only for the patient but the other numbers of the family at a very stressful time for all. Thank you all so much.

It gave me time to go and do other things. But I would have liked a bit more notice so I could arrange to do things with family members.

An evening nurse arrived, made sure that my husband was comfortable, checked his drugs and syringe driver. My husband was not conscious, but he was treated with full respect and nurse (Paul, I think) even carried on reading some poetry that my daughter and I had been doing. We were able to relax in the lounge when he died the next early am. I contacted the Hospice as we had waited 5 hrs for a D nurse to disconnect the driver. They contacted our local D nurse who came out very quickly.

Good nursing practice. Experienced in end of life care. We appreciated this as dying at home is still not the normal. I think most people would find it very difficult, especially without professional input.

Without that help of the hospice at home team me and my family would not have been able to bring my mum home to care for her. My mum was terminally ill with cancer and spent several days in hospital. It was her wish to be at home at the time of her death. The nurses provided by hospice at home were amazing. The care they gave to my mum was fantastic and the support they gave to myself and my family during this extremely difficult time was a great comfort. Nothing was ever too much for them. They answered all of our questions honestly and also helped our young children deal with and understand what was happening to their nanny. I cannot thank these wonderful people enough for the amazing support they showed us throughout it all. One of the nurses has phoned me since mums death just to see how we all are. I would highly recommend this service to anybody who is facing this difficult time. They really are angels in disguise.
