After deciding, with some trepidation, to have my hernia repaired, and seeing Mr. Kumar for the initial consultation, I recently had the procedure carried out at Spire hospital in Norwich. The operation was straightforward and successful. I found Mr. Kumar, and his team, professional and very friendly throughout, and would have no hesitation in recommending him to others.

From the start I felt listened to and validated. Mr Kumar was kind and patient and explained clearly what the procedure would entail. He worked hard to meet the surgery date I required in a very short amount of time. He visited both days after surgery to ensure I had everything I needed and to check on my progress. I would fully recommend Mr Kumar.

The operation was dealt with very professionally and i felt at ease throughout the whole procedure and suffered minimal pain. Mr Kumar is very professional, friendly and made the whole process very pleasant. A credit to his profession.

I had an inguinal hernia repair surgery carried out by Mr Kumar at the Spire Hospital Norwich. He repaired the inguinal one but actually found two femoral hernias, all three were successfully repaired. I healed quickly and was very pleased with the neat job that he did. Mr Kumar explained everything to me and answered my questions. He was very polite and I couldn’t have had anyone better looking after me. Mr Kumar and his entire team were extremely caring and I want to say a big thank you to all.

Profile

I am trained in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, specialising in the treatment of oesophagogastric cancer, gallbladder disease, hiatus hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery as well as open and laparoscopic hernia repair. I also have significant experience in performing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

I have been a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital since 2014. I qualified from Leeds University Medical School and completed a two year doctorate in medicine (MD) before entering higher surgical training in Yorkshire and the North East of England. I was privileged to gain a vast amount of expertise in the specialist resection of oesophagogastric (OG) cancer in one of the largest OG cancer centres in Europe, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne under the supervision of Professor SM Griffin OBE. Following completion of my surgical training, I was chosen for an overseas fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery with Prof. David Watson at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, Australia.

In my work in the NHS, I have led the development of an emergency gallbladder surgery service at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, improving patient access to prompt treatment of biliary conditions. Alongside busy clinical work, I am involved in postgraduate surgical teaching and training. My research interests include the management of oesophagogastric cancer as well as biliary and upper gastrointestinal diseases.

I have co-authored a leading textbook for the post-graduate FRCS examination in general surgery and have been an invited reviewer for surgical journals.

In all of my work, my primary commitment is to the patient and ensuring they receive the best possible care. My approach to patient care was recognised by the Eastern Daily Press sponsored Norfolk and Norwich Hospital awards when I reached the final round of nominations for the 'Patient Choice- Most Outsanding Individual Member of Staff 2017'.
