Review

My prostate was surgically removed in 2002 due to a Gleason stage 7 biopsy diagnosed carcinoma. Subsequent PSA monitoring recorded a sustained returned increase in values. Opinion was this resulted due to an incomplete excision of the gland and surrounding tissue. I saw Dr Birtle in 2017. She quickly arranged a course of external beam radiation treatments at the Rosemere in Preston. The dose, and the expertise of the Radiographers has resulted in what appears to be a complete cure. To date my PSA remains on the lowest threshold. I am grateful for the attentions of Dr Birtle - now Professor Birtle. Her management of my condition was so efficient accurate and confidence building. Many many thanks.

I met Prof Birtle regarding potential hormone and radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. She was highly professional and thorough and gave me all the information I needed to choose the right treatment for me. She was supported by an excellent specialist cancer nurse.

Professor Birtle is clearly a very busy clinician and academic but had taken time to fully understand all of my test results so she could have a plain speaking conversation with me explaining fully what was wrong and the pathway towards being cured. This included walking me through all of the images captured in earlier scans, explaining what each one meant and pausing to allow me to ask questions. I was particularly struck by the time Professor Birtle took to find out about me and my family which made me feel more of a person rather than just a patient. The advice about diet, exercise and intimacy with your partner was direct and extremely helpful. After my meeting with Professor Birtle I felt the most positive about my cancer diagnosis and the path ahead now feels less steep and that I have someone with me on the journey.

Professor Alison Birtle spent time carefully explaining my situation and options in a very clear understanding way which I greatly appreciated. I was shown the results of my scans and got a better understanding of what my situation entails. From my perspective I can not think how she and her team could have done anything better and I was very happy with the service I received.

Professional, kind, empathetic, clear, patient and a very nice person. I'd trust her with my life - actually I am doing just that.

I have seen 6 different consultants during my diagnosis for prostate cancer, and Prof. Birtle is the first one who took the trouble to show me my scans, and explain in detail what is wrong. She is also the first who took an interest in me as a person, beyond my illness. I found her very approachable and she answered all my questions.

Alison was really good at putting us at our ease from the outset. Her delivery was clear, considered and thoughtful, whilst making sure we fully understood my situation. Supplementing the narrative with pointing things out on the scan pictures was really helpful Her down to earth approach and language is just what I needed

Alison Birtle and the specialist cancer nurses present were very helpful. Professor Birtle explained carefully and clearly the details of my treatment and I felt I was in good hands. She listened carefully and answered my questions and dealt with my concerns. She took the trouble to review my previous medical history and ensure that as far as she was able I would get the right course of treatment for my situation.

Excellent, clear, clinically explained and holistic session was given to me by Professor Alison Birtle. I was feeling confused and uncertain about my prostate cancer diagnosis before my session with the Professor but the professor took the time to give me a very clear overview of my medical situation. The professor took me through all the clinical factors around the choices open to me as well as what the different aspects of my cancer grading meant, as well as the process and timeframes around the treatment and potential side effects. I was really grateful to be taken through a software system I could use to get further information which gave me details around the different treatment pathways. I felt very positive with the reassurance that though there would be challenges to face with either treatment choice I would be supported during my treatment to address any side effects that occurred. I was given good time to ask any questions and so felt fully informed and empowered to make my own choice around the treatment options after the session. The session with Professor Birtle left me completely assured I was in expert hands clinically, going forward, and that I was being treated holistically as an individual for any issues that might arise during my treatment. Having a Cancer Specialist Nurse present during the session and then a further conversation after the appointment was also very helpful and a great example of the additional support that would be available to me.
