On visiting Sussex Eye Hospital with some apprehension, I was seen by Mr Casswell, at very short notice. I was very impressed by his calm, thoughtful and reassuring manor, and clear explanation of my condition, which made me feel confident that I was in very good hands.

I will start by saying I highly, highly recommend Mr Casswell. Eyes are the last thing you want anyone touching. Mr Casswell is the ONLY person I would TOTALLY trust looking after mine. Two and a half years ago I noticed mini lightening flashes in my right eye. Accompanied by floaters. Having visited A&E in Portsmouth I was advised to go to Moorfields hospital in London urgently. To see Mr Casswell first thing the next morning. As my retina was detaching. By the next morning I could not see anything at all with my right eye. Lots of tests were carried out before meeting Mr Casswell. He immediately put me at ease. He takes time to listen to his patients and answers questions with a calm reassuring voice. Along with a clear explanation of what has happened and what needed to be done to save my eyesight. He told me I would need surgery later that day. Whilst this was obviously concerning I was 100% confident that I couldn’t be in safer hands. I was given medication and eye drops prior to the operation which kept me calm but fully awake. I can honestly say I never felt a thing. Literally nothing. No pain or even discomfort. Absolutely remarkable! He is very caring and gentle. I’m not sure how long the operation took but throughout he often asked how I was doing. He really does show exceptional concern for his patients comfort and welfare. The operation was successful and my retina was reattached. After a short time my eyesight started to return. Before leaving I was given lots of advice and leaflets explaining how best to recover. Along with a 24/7 helpline telephone number. My eyesight returned better than I can ever remember. It was fantastic. I was told the likelihood of a cataract forming was high after the operation. After a couple of visits to see Mr Casswell in Chichester I needed to have the cataract removed. He performed this operation for me. Once again he was very reassuring and once again it was pain free. My vision in my right eye is now incredible. I can’t thank Mr Casswell enough. Not only for restoring my vision but for the care and kindness he shows his patients. He treats everyone as an individual. Consistently goes the extra mile to ensure you get the absolutely very best of care during your treatments. I now have a cataract forming on my other eye. I will have no hesitation, or concerns, when it needs to be operated on in the future. As I mentioned earlier I would only trust Mr Casswell with my eyes and will return to him whenever required. You will be in the safest hands with Mr Casswell. I couldn’t be more impressed. Thank you so much for all the care and professionalism you have shown over the last two and a half years.

I can only concur with the excellent reviews I have read, about Mr Edward Casswell, Vitreoretinal Department, Moorfield’s Hospital. I was referred in September 2020, with vision disturbance due to Epiretinal membrane, and was seen by Mr Edward Casswell on 6th April 2021. I found him to be a Professional, Courteous, and Caring doctor. After scans and tests done, he explained my diagnosis clearly, with evidence, and confirmation opinion, from Eminent Senior VR Consultant Mr Paul Sullivan, that I had not only got an Epiretinal membrane, but also an underlying genetic condition called Vitelliform, which has similar symptoms. This was a bit of a shock to me. He too the time to explained my diagnosis, and prognosis, despite having a heavy workload. This helped me to make an informed decision to proceed to surgery, with the possibility that some of the symptoms would reduce. He discussed whether I would like any anxiety reducing medication, during surgery, and was glad to say Yes!. Operation day went as planned. Mr Casswell reviewed me prior. The very pleasant Sri Lankan anaesthetist gave me my sedation, which kept me relaxed but fully awake. Surgery was performed by Mr Casswell and assistant. I saw no instrumentation, and was quite relaxed during surgery, being cared by the great staff. Recovery post op was uneventful. Gas bubble drops etc as planned. I was seen in post op clinic this week by Mr Casswell, eye recovering well, and should continue to improve over next few months. The Vitelliform remains, but hopefully the removal of the membrane, and insertion of lens, (necessary as vitreo retinal surgery can cause cataract, or deterioration) in older patients. I have been discharged from VR. I am so glad to have had the support of such a good doctor during a stressful time

I have a bit of a long story to tell with my x6 eye operations/oedema but I was impressed that he sat, listened and took it all in, without hurrying. We looked together at the digital scan present and past...with a brief explanation to me. He then presented my case to the top specialist, together with five other doctors.

I'm a man in my eighties and met him at Moorfields A&E on 23 Sept, having had a transient loss of vision in my right eye that afternoon. He was friendly, listened to the story, examined me carefully and quickly, and at once made an appointment for me at the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at University College Hospital for early next morning, which was exactly what I needed. My wife was with me. We were both impressed; we are doctors.
