I also had Jamie Murphy as my doctor who was equally amazing. I felt so safe in both these doctors care. Everything was explained to me so I could understand and they both visited me often and checked my progress.

I have been dealing with catamenial pneumothoraces for the past 14 years. I have had 8 episodes of my lung collapsing of which each one is different. Since this is such a rare condition and not much is known why some months it collapses and others it doesn't or why sometimes a chest drain works and others not, this all makes treatment very difficult. In the past 2 months my right lung has collapsed twice. The hospital I went to before meeting Dr. Petal had to insert 4 different chest drains because 3 of them had failed. A few days ago when I was admitted to a&e again, in the first 2 days of being there, I already had 2 failed drains and it was looking like it was going to go the same way as the previous time. I found the main problem is the doctors wouldn't listen to me, I've been dealing with this condition for 14 years and have been living in my body for 42 years and am most always on the money when it comes to what I need to for my specific and rare condition. This brings me to Dr. Petal. After 14 years of hearing the same things over and over and over, I was shocked when Dr. Petal had new ideas that I had never even been offered before. The first thing that struck me was his willingness to listen to me, the patient. At one point he even said, whatever is best for you, we will do as you know your body! That's unheard of in the world I've been circling with this condition for the past decade and a half. I have had care from both the United States and the United Kingdom but nothing that compared to my experience 3 days ago when Dr. Petal was about to give me a chest drain. First he gave me a Introdermal local anaesthetic and a Intropleural local anaesthetic instead of subcutaneous local anaesthetic. The difference is astonishing, you hardly feel more then the initial sharp sratch. He used a Seldinger 12 French chest drain that has thinner walls but slightly larger in diameter which I was excited to try as all other drains recently have failed me. The minute he inserted the drain, I knew he had it right. All of a sudden I felt the pressure releasing off my chest. He then put a anaesthetic through the drain, a move I had never seen and was seriously life changing in terms of pain at that moment. This was all done under ultrasound, live pictures, for guidance compared to a CT that is not live, it's a image from a few minutes ago or a drain inserted on the bedside by memory from looking at an x-ray. As he finished the procedure, he dresses the area around the new drain with a sponge like material that helps keep the area sterile and clean as it heals. This was all done on my comfortable hospital bed, in my room with a nice and pleasant conversation throughout. I have to say, as unpleasant as this procedure should be and always has been for me, I actually felt good and was completely relaxed because I was confident in Dr. Petal and his abilities. His mind is open to new ideas, new ways of approaching a situation and that in turn makes the patient have trust in him. Dr. Petal is the only doctor you should be seeing if you have a pneumothorax of any kind. His method is far beyond what I have ever experienced in 14 years.
