I was referred to Cameron Hatrick for treatment under the NHS. I had developed pain and weakness in both shoulders. From being fit and strong in my mid 60s, even to the extent of being a veteran pole vaulter, I suffered pain and restricted movement of the shoulders. Reaching up or to one side was difficult. I needed two hands to be able to lift a kettle. I also suffered from severe carpal tunnel syndrome in my left wrist. X-rays indicated that the joints had arthritis and the shoulder tendons were impinged. Mr Hatrick referred me to a specialist surgeon for my wrist but decided to treat the shoulders with ultrasound guided injections of cortisone. There was immediate pain relief although the shoulders remained weak. A course of physiotherapy had been partially completed when I returned for an assessment of my current state, eleven weeks after the second injection, my shoulders were no longer painful. The strength in my arms was greatly improved. I felt confident that the exercises I had been given would continue to improve my strength. I was no longer waking with pain several times a night. The accurate assessment and treatment has avoided unnecessary surgery. Quite separately, the surgeon Mr Hatrick recommended for my wrist, Christopher Williams, resolved the carpal tunnel problem that had also prevented me sleeping normally.

Following a painful mountain bike crash resulting in a massive Rotator Cuff tear I was recommended to Mr Hatrick for treatment. Following his examination he recommended surgery to repair the damage. Pre surgery he explained all the risks, the likely post-operative recovery time and the do’s and don’ts during the recovery period. As tedious as they were the do and don’ts were good advice and recovery went well with no post-operative problems. Six months following the operation I am back to full use of the damaged shoulder which for someone 70+ is a good result. All credit to Mr Hattrick’s treatment. I would certainly Recommend Mr Hatrick for his straightforward, friendly manner, clear communication and surgical skill.

Mr Hatrick diagnosed my problem immediately and proposed a shoulder replacement. He advised of the risks associated with my other health problems which I immediately understood and he arranged for my surgery and all the necessary pre-op assessments which took into account my pre-existing heart problems. The surgery has been a total success and I did not suffer from any pain or problems from my surgery. I am undertaking physiotherapy which is specifically designed to repair the muscles that I had not used properly for two years, before being referred to Mr Hatrick. My surgery has been a great success and has greatly improved my quality of life. Thank you once gain Mr Hatrick.

Excellent in every way - delighted with his skill, care and attitude. My only feedback (not necessarily for him, perhaps more generally) is that it would be quite useful to be given reading material or references to find info about procedures and options available, especially when thinking about fixations and their removal.

I had a painful shoulder which interfered with my keep-fit regime as I had a limited range of movement. Mr Hatrick performed an arthroscopic subacromial decompression procedure on it and 3 months later I have a full range of movement. I would thoroughly recommend Mr Hatrick for this procedure.

Profile

Cameron Hatrick trained at Clare College, Cambridge and St. Thomas’ Hospital, London qualifying in 1990. He underwent Basic Surgical Training on the St Bartholomew’s rotation, London and then specialised in Orthopaedics on the South East Thames Orthopaedic rotation.

He undertook two fellowships in Sydney, Australia, sub-speacialising in shoulder and hand surgery.
The first fellowship was with Professor Michael Tonkin in the Department of Hand Surgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital. The second fellowship was with Professor David Sonnabend in the Department of Orthopaedics, Prince of Wales Hospital and also with Professor William Walsh in the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories in the same hospital.

In November 1999 he was awarded the Walter Mercer Gold Medal and the Arthur Edward Burton Memorial Prize for his performance in the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Orthopaedic Surgery. The following year he was nominated as the British Orthopaedic Association ‘Young Ambassador’ to the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association at their annual congress.

In 2001 he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, now the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH). He has developed a successful multi-disciplinary, ‘one-stop’ shoulder clinic based in Lewes Victoria Hospital with an on-site radiology colleague undertaking investigations as required and advanced physiotherapy practitioners reviewing patients alongside him in the clinic. He was the lead orthopaedic surgeon for the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre from its opening in June 2006 until September 2009. From September 2009 until February 2013 he was the lead orthopaedic consultant for BSUH NHS Trust. He was a member of council for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) from 2015-2018. He is currently Medical Director of The Montefiore Hospital in Hove. His practice covers the full range of arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery, including ASAD, arthroscopic and open shoulder stabilisation, SLAP repair, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement (anatomical and reverse) and fixation of upper limb fractures.

Teaching and Training is a particular interest of his. He is a faculty member of the Watanabe Club, which runs regular shoulder arthroscopy courses around the UK introducing surgeons to arthroscopic shoulder surgery and teaching advanced techniques to established surgeons. He has lectured at international meetings and lectures regularly at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and on the South East Thames Orthopaedic Rotation. He has set up and runs a regular open surgical skills course and, in 2005, he was appointed a Visiting Fellow at the Brighton University Faculty of Health in recognition of his contribution to post-graduate teaching. He is also a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).

Cameron is married with three children (all now in their 20's) and enjoys playing tennis (unfortunately being beaten easily by his son!), cycling, skiing, hiking on the Downs/ in the Lakes/ Snowdonia, sailing and windsurfing (fair-weather only nowadays!).
