After a shoulder dislocation and fracture that continued to cause significant pain despite interventions, my rheumatologist referred me to Mr Hatrick. He did an amazing job. The 4" scar on the shoulder can barely be seen and the bicep scar has almost disappeared. Three months on I am almost pain free and have to resist using my arm too much. Mr Hatrick instills confidence and his communication has been excellent

I saw Mr. Hatrick today for a follow up appointment. The advice and treatment that he had previously given me has proved to be both accurate and successful. His explanations are clear and concise. He carefully explained my M.R.I. Scan, carried out a thorough physical examination and made it quite clear that he would be happy to see me again should I feel that it is necessary. I could not have wished for better, more thoughtful and caring treatment.

Mr Neil Cameron Hatrick is not only a very skilled surgeon, but also a very good communicator. Mr Hatrick has always taken great care to explain to me in detail what my condition was, and the surgery required. I was always free to ask questions, which were sensitively received, and always replied to in full. As the patient, I was never 'talked over'. I felt fully confident and supported in his care, and I think as a result of a good and positive surgeon and patient experience, I was more empowered and worked harder with physio, to maximise a good recovery outcome. Thank you Mr Hatrick for your skill, care and dedication.

Having first seen a clinician in September 2019 about my ongoing pain in my left shoulder I was subsequently diagnosed with moderate osteoarthritis and treatment was a steroid injection. This lasted one week, and they wanted to give me another one! At the start of lock-down, following a referral, I had a private consultation with a Rheumatologist, who when she looked at the x-ray said it wasn't moderate osteoarthritis but severe, there was no way that an injection would solve the problem, and would need a complete shoulder replacement. She recommended Cameron Hatrick and the NHS were happy to refer me to him for surgery. Unfortunately I first met Mr Hatrick at the Sussex County hospital on an extremely hot day in August 2020, when he was running at least an hour late, and I only saw him for about five minutes. Not a good first impression. My operation was cancelled in January 2021 for Covid, then in May when Mr Hatrick himself phoned me up the evening before to say that an essential piece of equipment needed for my operation was faulty, and they would try to get another before the morning. He himself then phoned again at least twice the next day to explain that they had found a replacement but it was in Newcastle, but he would personally try to get me re-booked at the earliest opportunity. His personal involvement was a big plus for me, and I did appreciate that. I eventually had the operation in June and it has been a resounding success and the scar is very neat. I have since been back for check ups at the Victoria hospital in Lewes, which is far more convenient than the Sussex County, and although I have only seen him once there, I did see him recently and I would happily recommend him to anyone else needing shoulder surgery in the future.

Profile

Cameron Hatrick trained at Clare College, Cambridge and St. Thomas’ Hospital, London qualifying in 1990. He underwent Basic Surgical Training on the St Bartholomew’s rotation, London and then specialised in Orthopaedics on the South East Thames Orthopaedic rotation.

He undertook two fellowships in Sydney, Australia, sub-speacialising in shoulder and hand surgery.
The first fellowship was with Professor Michael Tonkin in the Department of Hand Surgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital. The second fellowship was with Professor David Sonnabend in the Department of Orthopaedics, Prince of Wales Hospital and also with Professor William Walsh in the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories in the same hospital.

In November 1999 he was awarded the Walter Mercer Gold Medal and the Arthur Edward Burton Memorial Prize for his performance in the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Orthopaedic Surgery. The following year he was nominated as the British Orthopaedic Association ‘Young Ambassador’ to the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association at their annual congress.

In 2001 he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, now the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH). He has developed a successful multi-disciplinary, ‘one-stop’ shoulder clinic based in Lewes Victoria Hospital with an on-site radiology colleague undertaking investigations as required and advanced physiotherapy practitioners reviewing patients alongside him in the clinic. He was the lead orthopaedic surgeon for the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre from its opening in June 2006 until September 2009. From September 2009 until February 2013 he was the lead orthopaedic consultant for BSUH NHS Trust. He was a member of council for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) from 2015-2018. He is currently Medical Director of The Montefiore Hospital in Hove. His practice covers the full range of arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery, including ASAD, arthroscopic and open shoulder stabilisation, SLAP repair, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement (anatomical and reverse) and fixation of upper limb fractures.

Teaching and Training is a particular interest of his. He is a faculty member of the Watanabe Club, which runs regular shoulder arthroscopy courses around the UK introducing surgeons to arthroscopic shoulder surgery and teaching advanced techniques to established surgeons. He has lectured at international meetings and lectures regularly at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and on the South East Thames Orthopaedic Rotation. He has set up and runs a regular open surgical skills course and, in 2005, he was appointed a Visiting Fellow at the Brighton University Faculty of Health in recognition of his contribution to post-graduate teaching. He is also a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).

Cameron is married with three children (all now in their 20's) and enjoys playing tennis (unfortunately being beaten easily by his son!), cycling, skiing, hiking on the Downs/ in the Lakes/ Snowdonia, sailing and windsurfing (fair-weather only nowadays!).
