Review of Beaumont Ward GAU / Early Pregnancy
2nd April 2023

The EPAU staff were amazing, Sam, Hope and Lucy were kind, knowledgeable and very caring. I came up from A&E and they were supportive. I saw a locum who clearly had no idea what he was doing and the EPAU team took control of the situation and made sure I had good care and took the time to explain and talk to me along the way. I cannot praise the team enough. They deal with people who are in a terribly difficult situation and they are absolutely exceptional at what they do.

Suggested improvements
The locum doctor I saw was shocking. He clearly did not know what to do, both myself and the EPAU team had to remind him repeatedly to take swabs. He then stood in front of me and mixed up the swabs and the tubes, literally standing there crossing them over in mid air trying to work out which went in which tube in front of me. He told me my cervix was open which we had previously discussed was not what we wanted and then claimed he wasn’t sure. I have a particular set of issues and I had a feeling he wasn’t telling the truth as he performed the exam very quickly which is impossible. The registrar who later came was unable to perform the examination and the next doctor I have seen at EPAU was also unable to perform the examination. The EPAU staff took the matter into their own hands and called the registrar. Given the sensitive circumstances all patients who visit EPAU are in the locum did not deliver an acceptable standard of care but also did not perform his medical duties to a standard that is acceptable at the baseline level.

Review of A & E

One nurse was exceptionally kind very professional and treated me with tremendous care.. She was compassionate focused and engaged with me as a person not just a patient.

Suggested improvements
I think a written explanation of the diagnosis and what to expect from the treatment would have been really useful to take away. The diagnosis was very kindly explained but I was feeling terrible and after 5 hrs mostly in the waiting room totally spaced out.

Long gaps between linking with staff who were all friendly. More update info would have been good. Minor injuries area very much feels like being in no man’s land

Suggested improvements
Wait for triage was long and inevitably led to needing an X-ray which also had a wait. Quick review after that though

Review of A & E

I had two visits to A&E within a couple of days and one to out of hours practice at Warwick Hospital. As I don’t know to which this refers, I will comment on all. First time I was treated in a perfunctory manner and basically told to go away and take painkillers - despite mentioning pain in my back, I was not examined there at all, only my tummy. The doctor was scribbling with a pencil on a scrap of paper, and seemed disinterested. I didn’t see him again and was finally visited by another, possibly more senior doctor, who lectured me about what wasn’t wrong with me and told me to take cocodamol. The second time the examinations were much more thorough but I was left to feel like I was making it up - at one point I explained to the doctor that I ‘just wasn’t feeling well’. He responded, ‘well you look well to me.’ Three hours after returning from A&E I developed an extensive shingles rash at the site of the extreme pain I was experiencing. Presumably my ‘not feeling well’ was a valid comment after all! My final visit to the OOH doc could not have been better. He really listened to me, understood my symptoms, prescribed antivirals and made me feel like he was interested. On all occasions by the way, the nursing staff were lovely, kind, friendly and helpful.

Suggested improvements
I appreciate that shingles is a difficult diagnosis to make when there’s no rash. And I also appreciate that A&E is not the place for diagnosis of conditions but for emergency treatment. I also understand why I was told that ‘I do t need to come back to A&E again’ . However I was clearly in sufficient pain that the Oramorph didn’t settle - and I was clearly scared, and feeling very unwell. Sadly I was made to feel like I was wasting the doctor’s time. A real shame - my husband was luckily with me but that experience would have been a very scary one for somebody on their own. My experience with the OOH doc was like chalk and cheese - he was empathic and actually listened. He was patient, answered my questions and made me feel reassured. I cannot thank or recommend him enough, but I’m afraid I can’t remember his name - I saw him at 7.30 pm on Sunday 26 March.
