The building is modern and easily accessible. Reception staff are friendly and helpful. My appointment letter had the wrong time given and I was booked in for a later time. The staff accommodated me despite this error and their busy schedules.

Review of Aylesbury Vale Community Mental Health Team
17th September 2021

It seems that the Crisis team - process is designed for the patient to fit into, rather than the system adapting to what the patient needs. Our first meeting (for my daughter) was not with a psychologist, but with two nurses - administrators, their job was to spend an hour asking my daughter to open her heart and go to dark and deep places to explain her situation, after which i was expected to take her home with no plan in place or professional help to deal with the condition she would have been in. Then after a meeting with everyone she might get to see the professional that is required or it might be one or two more visits before this would occur. And to top it all as this is a crisis situation the care is short term and then she is passed on again. Can anyone tell me how someone who is so vulnerable and needs consistency, and someone to trust once they have open up and gone to very dark places, can be expected to do this over and over to numerous people? This is not a system or service that serves the patient but feels more like a process that fits around the department, I recommend that someone in authority reviews this and hopefully can see the massive disparity between helping and hindering the person in desperate need. The last 12 months or so have show us all how important mental health is, but also how we all need to adapt and change to improve the service we offer our customer or in your case patients. I hope this email is read by the appropriate team members and taken as a plea to help the most vulnerable in society by providing a “fit for purpose” system that is cutting edge and offering bespoke help.

Review of Ruby Ward
8th September 2021

A core group of regular staff were always caring, compassionate and ready to listen and I felt that they treated me with dignity and saw me as a fellow human being worthy of that treatment. A minority of the regular staff and most of the agency staff didn’t even bother to learn my name and I felt like just another anonymous patient to them which was demeaning.

Suggested improvements
One of the other patients regularly subjected me to prolonged verbal abuse and was physically intimidating. There was no provocation from me. Other patients were subjected to the same treatment from this patient. Apart from escorting me to my room to get away from her I don’t feel this situation was dealt with appropriately. I ended up locking myself in my room for extended periods and feeling it was unsafe to access the shared spaces on the ward. Staff witnessed this abuse on many occasions and rarely intervened nor did they ever follow up by asking if I was okay when I had locked myself in my room.

Staff were excellent but they are drowning in duties and there appears to be a lot of box ticking. It would be good if we could spent more time with the nurses but they have so much paperwork to fill out.

Suggested improvements
Replace the pool table and buy a table tennis table.

For Amber Ward: I didn't initially feel involved in my wife's care until the family surgery meeting, it is better now. Obviously, it has been difficult due to the COVID restrictions and that's nobody's fault. I also felt a bit apprehensive when visiting the WLC Amber ward, having to wait for locks to get unlocked and locked, hearing somebody yelling, and seeing the keys. One thing that I really appreciate is being able to reach my wife on the phone. Also, having attended the family surgery, I feel more connected and supported now.
