My son , who has Aspergers Syndrome, was admitted as an emergency after 4 weeks of pain and rectal bleeding. He was triaged through A and E and seen by Medical doctors. He was admitted to a trolley bay on the AMU ( Acute Medical Unit) that night. He was seen by both General Medical Physician' and by a Gastric Consultant and Specialist nurses. He under went a string of tests during the next 24 hours and was diagnosed with Acute Ulcerative Colitis. He remained on the AMUvfor 5 nights as there were no beds on the Gastric Ward. However, the Specialist Gastric nurses visited him regularly in conjunction with excellent, kind and dedicated staff on the AMU. They took time to understand his fears associated to his Aspergers. It was a very scary time for my son and all of the family. Especially when the wards were locked down due to the high admissions of Flu and Covid patients. The nursing staff were run off their feet yet his Dad and I were treated with the same kindness and respect that my son received. After 5 nights he was transferred to the Gastric ward , and was discharged home to Convalesce two days later. He is aware of his treatment plan going forward and the further help the hospital will provide to him, on a regular basis, to manage his condition. This lifesaving and excellent care was provided in the middle of the strikes ( which we ALL FULLY SUPPIRT) by nurses and. Paramedic crews. We did not have to find one penny. THANK YOU PRINCESS OF WALES HOSPITAL To the Consultans, Doctors, Nurses, Pharmasists, Porters, Cleaners and Assistants who all played a part in treating and caring for my son. Our NHS is a jewel in our crown. .
