I was wheeled up from A+E on my trolley, where I discovered that I did not have a bed, as there had been a breakdown in communication between the two departments. I was told that I would have to wait in the corridor for a short time, which I did not mind, as I understand that these things happen. The only annoyance I had was that the sister on the ward was talking about me, only a very short distance from where I was, saying such things as 'well she will just have to wait'. At no point did she come and explain the situation or apologise etc. Once I was in my room I had a very good standard of care. All the nurses that looked after me where hard-working and friendly. The same can not be said of my experience in A+E, where the nurse that was looking after me was exceptionally rude and did not care in the slightest that I was in extreme pain. I was left in agony for 8 hours due to the fact that it was believed I might have had a reaction to morphine in the past. I would not have cared had they been able to find me an alternative analgesic that was effective against the pain, however every time I asked the nurse if I could be given something else she just looked at me in disdain. She got irate when I would move, although I was unable to sit still because of the pain. She seemed to think that she did not need to communicate with words and that a steely look would be enough to convey the fact that she needed me to do something. Unfortunately the ability to read facial expressions and body language is lost when you are rolling around in agony, and therefore it would probably be easier if she would just explain in plain English in the future. I would not want to be looked after by this nurse ever again, nor would I like to think of her looking after one of my relatives. I do not know why she chose to go into a caring profession when she simply does not care!
