24th June 2024

My partner dropped me off at 6.45 am at King George's Adult day care dept, as instructed on 22-6-24 for surgery on my right hand. When she dropped me off she wanted to come in with me as she felt that as an 80 year old white man I would be overlooked, I assured her that would not be the case. The patients were allowed on the ward at 7am. Around 1 and a half hours later the doctors came to see me to explain what was going to happen and mark the area to be operated on. There were 4 other people in the section I was in. I waited and waited, the other people on the ward were attended to one by one. I enquired on several occasions when I was likely to be seen and was told " it should not be long now" I went out again to ask what was happening at around 1pm as I was supposed to be an " early admission" and was in some distress. I was not seen until around 2.30 in the afternoon, bearing in mind I had nothing to eat or drink since 6pm the day before. I feel that as an 80 year old white male I was pretty much ignored for much of the time I was there. The entire ward was emptied before I was seen so why was I told to be there at 7am. I eventually left the hospital at 6.45 after what turned out to be an extremely stressful time. I await any Comment. I must add all the staff were very good. But the organisation was not.

Suggested improvements
Get patients in at the correct time and maybe take into account their ages with regard to waiting times.
