As my husbands wife/carer with many years experience of PEG feeding I know only too well the stress of a blocked feeding tube. added to that stress was the thought of the approaching weekend when care is limited. Phoning Homeward out of hours proved helpful but even with their advice and many hours of me trying to remove the blockage I was unable to do so. After a troubled night I phoned our Health professional Fiona Deller who sort the help of Homeward nurse Jackie Coombs. It took 3 hrs for Jackie to unblock the feeding tube and then to immediately set about hydration. I have nothing but admiration for Fiona and Jackie, they would not be beaten as they knew the stressful prospect for my husband would have been a admission to NGH via A E , a stay of at least 5 nights with only intravenous hydration. with no surety of a slot in the Endoscopy department to replace the PEG. By their action they not only saved the Health Service a considerable amount of money but also my husbands nutritional health, which Fiona has always diligently sort to maintain.
