The wait for my surgery was too long, as I was last on the list, not going down till 5.45 from 7am starvation. However the anaesthesia was excellently explained and managed and as far as a patient can tell the surgery also went well. The pain was well managed by the staff doing the medication. The care from all the hospital staff was excellent and I couldn't fault the food and the ambience. An unusual situation arose when a blood test revealed a very low sodium level. The advice given by the ward Doctor was to drink less water. My blood pressure was very low and I was told to drink more! There was a fault in my bathroom as no hot water came from the tap! Even the staff couldn't make it work and they had to bring me bowls of warm water to wash with! The physio staff were good and I was discharged with great optimism for a short recovery as I had managed several walks, plus going up and down stairs. However I wasn't told that, on leaving the main pain killer medication(nerve block) would be stopped. Also I wasn't told that the bruising, swelling and stiffness which develop would make it difficult to do the necessary exercises to continue progression. So I became disheartened and it took two weeks in a wonderful Convalescent Home to get me back on track. I had been given an appointment to return for the removal of the wound clips. This was not well done by the nurse and I suffered a good deal of pain. She also informed me that I wasn't resting enough and I should do fewer walks and exercises and rest more. This was in direct opposition to the advice given by the physio staff to exercise as often as possible. I would have been quite happy not to return for the removal of my clips as there was always a qualified nursing sister on duty in my Convalescent Home and most of the other residents had their stitches/ clips removed there and said it wasn't painful, just occasionally a bit uncomfortable.
