Having been an inpatient in Epsom General Hospital post ileostomy reversal surgery I would like to say how well I was cared for by all the staff on Swift Ward, nothing was too much trouble in spite of staff shortages. The ward sister was so supportive and friendly giving me much needed advice whilst in their care which I’ll be forever grateful for. My grateful thanks also has to go to the wonderful stoma nurse who visited me regularly not just during my hospital stay but also after my discharge, her weekly phone calls to check how I was coping was such a great help to me giving me all sorts of helpful advice and I have to say during the following weeks and months during my very slow recovery she was the one person that always managed to bring me hope and confidence in coping with the hard and long recovery. I owe a great deal to this wonderful lady. I feel most fortunate to have been admitted and cared for by Epsom General Hospital, to me it has to be one of our great NHS Hospitals! Whilst writing the only criticism I have be it at Epsom or St Helier hospitals is the organising of discharge prescription medication. Each time I have been officially discharged it has taken hours for the medication to arrive back up to the ward. Is there a system that could be devised so that a particular pharmacist could deal with just the discharge prescriptions so that a patient can be able to leave hospital sooner instead of the long waiting around on the ward OR if physically able being supported by another adult be allowed to collect their medication from the hospital pharmacy themselves instead of waiting for a member of staff going from one ward to another throughout the hospital delivering them? Just a thought?
