Review of Hospice @ Home written by a carer
12th June 2019

As a family who was brand new to the experience of palliative care, the fact that various parts of the service were provided by different agencies was a bit confusing. We had District Nurses, Carers from Age Concern and palliative care plus respite care from Cynthia Spencer (I think). However the family could not fault the quality of care that my mother received in her final days - it was professional, sympathetic and organised. All our questions as a family were answered. My mother could be at peace in her own homw. My only comment would be how hard it was to get my mother out of hospital into palliative care - our (and her) hospital experience was disjointed and frightening. She was so distressed and yet the doctor's kept insisting on treating her, even though her illness was clearly terminal. We were just so thankful and grateful to get her home and into palliative care which was what she and we wanted. So I thank everyone involved in her care at home from the bottom of our hearts. This should be available for everyone - not just those who have middle-class, determined children to fight for them. If you want to die at home with appropriate support, that should be allowed. Thank you to Cynthia Spencer and the other agencies for supporting Mum and our family in this.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

Thank you for your feedback on how you valued the care provided. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the transfer from the Hospital as we as a service don't have control over this. We require the hospital to refer to our service and once this is completed we will endeavour to transfer patients as quickly as possible but is dependent on bed availability. We are also working as a County to try and reduce the disjointed nature of care at end of life, with it being provided by so many different organisations. We are working on how the many organisations can work together to ensure there is a seamless transfer of care from one organisation to another and in the future coordinated by one organisation.

The help I received from the nurses has helped reduce my arm and also they have given me the knowledge to help myself by showing me excersises and drainage movements that I can do at home on a daily basis to help keep my lympodema under control. I was always treated with dignity and respect and if it was worried or concerned they would always see me. I saw feel much better knowing I have self help techniques and correct fitting sleeves to keys my lympodema from getting worse. I feel they are a very valuable part of recovery on my cancer journey.

I am finding it almost impossible to express in words the deep gratitude the family and myself feel for the care and support that the hospice at home staff gave to the patient and every member of our family. You helped make it possible for us to spend those last days together at home. That has been and will always be a source of great comfort and even joy in our sadness. I now understand the depth of meaning there is in the word 'lovingkindness'. Thank you all.

Parking - we had an appointment at 9-30, was here just after 9 o'clock and not a parking space in sight. Luckily my husband brought me and sat in car waiting! What would I have done if I drove myself. More parking please.

Thank you for your review. We are aware of recent difficulties regarding parking on the site. Unfortunately it is not possible to build more car parking spaces but we are communicating with visitors to the site to park further down the road.

The initial consultant and several hours of form filling was a bit stressful but after that the care and help received was excellent! Sadly the patient passed away 9 days after coming home on EOL treatment but at least he was able to achieve his wish and die at home.
