I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the wonderful District Nurses who looked after my husband in the many years he was unwell and then most recently before and after his passing on 23rd April 2024. All, whose names I cannot remember, who visited him over the years and always treated him with kindness, compassion and respect. In particular, Elena and Moni, who used to visit regularly to take bloods. However, extra special thanks go to the team of District Nurses who helped care for him in his final days - Karen, Holly and Emma and the two District Nurses who came to verify his death. Karen in particular was like a rock of calm efficiently and effectively not only settling and caring for my husband’s needs but also mine and my stepdaughter. We felt ‘heard’ and supported. When I look back on those three days whilst my husband declined I have a great sense of calm and peace even though there was a sea of people coming and going – including the ambulance crews, the out of hours doctor, our own GP, St Catherine’s Hospice manager and carers. I know this was because Karen was there calmly ‘steering the ship’ so to speak! It was our greatest wish that my husband would be able to end his life peacefully and with dignity here at home. It was a special, calm, almost serene experience only made possible by Karen and the team and for that we will be eternally grateful.
