I’ve complex health issues that have to be addressed on a daily basis. It was very obvious that my healthcare requirements were discussed at length every day at every hand over. Nurses HCA’s and my personal nurses would talk about my progress and any issues I’d have with me, which was very, very important to me and I found myself at total ease. Over many years I’ve experienced good care and indifferent care from the NHS. At times it seemed especially bad. The care and attention the entire Cleveland team has given to me is quite outstanding. The best I’ve ever received and I’m so grateful for it. Every single day I was blessed with at least someone who went beyond the necessary effort, to make me feel cared for. From cleaners, to Catering, HCA and nurses, doctors and surgeons, to physiotherapists and front of house. I even cheekily asked for a view of the trees in Buckingham Palace gardens and was placed in a corner suite. Wow. Thank you.

Suggested improvements
One thing. Only one. The beef broth. I was on a restricted diet for a while and it was recommended for me. I’m not sure what could be done to make it more palatable, but I didn’t go beyond the first few spoonfuls. Sorry.

Colin Hart is a very engaging and patient focused surgeon. Warm, friendly, knowledgeable and supportive, the positive adjectives to use are limitless. Colin and his team of surgical colleagues including, but not limited to; Chetan Bhan, William English Kariem El Boghdadly can be found under the Thesaurus heading for:- “What does excellence in surgical care, continuity of treatment and compassion for patients look like”. I had total confidence in my consultant. He’s a great guy. Chetan also has a great way of making people feel at ease whilst exuding confidence in his abilities. William, a daily visitor was very good at making the complex understandable and was very helpful.

Every single person involved in my care was outstanding. A few deserve a special mention. Roseli - for her compassion and kindness. Ana Gonçalves - for her knowledge, attention to detail, empathy, concern and her preparedness to make sure that I was comfortable with her treatment. That she was talking about my care in her time off from work with Katie Sim is a example of how she ensured continuity of care. Katie Sim - was very supportive. Even though only with me for a morning. She listened to my story, was empathetic and compassionate, able to talk about my health issues with confidence and in the knowledge that she had been briefed about my needs in her time off. Agency Nurse Phillips (his middle name) - I only learned that he is an agency nurse on my last day in conversation with Colin Hart and Katie. I was paying Phillips complements and Colin was asking about him. Phillips is THE EPITOME of what good nursing care is. The man is a giant, not only in stature but in his knowledge of the nursing profession he works in, he is also truly a beautifully spirited man inside and out. He made my stay with you so much more special. He shared with me his life story and I shared mine. He was interested in me and I him. He was always preparing for the next part of my treatment, be it medication, drain removal, alternative ways to deliver the antibiotics medication, as my veins were collapsing constantly and options for new cannula were limited. As he knew I was a veteran, everyday he’d marched in the room and salute. He made me smile, laugh, encourage me to do more, and he gave me the best of himself. Aishling - Another impressive Nurse who frequently made my life easier. Her knowledge is incredible and she has the most amazing skills. Camila and all the Nurses - In a 30 year period of poor health, I’ve had indifferent experiences with nursing care but Camila and her colleagues have totally changed my perspective, indifferent nursing is not reflective of a demographic or group of people. Pain has a great way of making one form opinions and a near death experience certainly helps in that sense. This was a life changing experience in my care. Physiotherapist Chad and his team - Stars the lot of them. Chad had me wandering the ward within a day of my surgery. I was compliant with his instructions as I want to recover from this as soon as possible. His persistence of effort, knowledge and patience along with motivating me was a great thing. Catering Team “Fawia?” in particular - A wonderful lady, happy always, concerned for my comfort, obliging and courteous. She brought cakes to me on my birthday and led the singing of “Happy Birthday” and brought her colleagues to help. Mr Chetan and Ana also joined in. Along with HCA Billy and the Phlebotomy team who always found a vein where none existed previously, the whole 5th floor team were focused on my well-being, my progress; sometimes hourly monitoring; and made me feel better, faster, and so very cared for.
