6th February 2023

Once I moved to the 5th floor, the nursing care was very good. The nursing assistants however, seemed inexperienced and uncommitted. While the night nurse in ICU was very good, day nurses in ICU did not fill me with confidence.

Suggested improvements
The food I received in ICU was poor (e.g. breakfast arrived late and scrambled eggs were sitting in a pool of oil), but it was ok when I was on the 5th floor. It seemed strange in a cardio-thoracic unit that the food (e.g. soup) was salty, and it wasn’t possible to get skimmed milk or wholemeal bread/toast. My biggest problem was with the height of the toilet bowls - much too high for the average woman living on this island - and this exacerbated post-op constipation problems! Finally, adherence to mask wearing rules wasn’t great. I had to ask a number of people to pull up or tighten masks, including a senior member of staff in ICU.

Ms Tan speaks in a calm confident manner, and is never condescending or arrogant. She adjusts her language to her audience, and our pre-op discussion left me very well prepared, mentally and physically, for the operation.

Ms Tan, and most nursing staff, especially Jessica who delivered pre-op and post-op advice and care.
