The surgical, anaesthetic and nursing staff were welcoming and explained every step of what would happen during the procedure and my stay at the hospital. The nursing staff were exceptional. I appreciated their care.

Suggested improvements
This isn't about what could be done better but more an observation. I sustained an Open IIIB Pilon Fracture in 2007, fixed using an illazarov frame and internal screws. The rehab for this type of treatment was very tough. During my time at the hospital, the nursing and physio staff appeared concerned that I was getting home by taxi and that I'd be alone without help from friends or family. I explained that friends had offered support, but I envisaged I could cope based on the conversation with the surgeon in November about what the rehab would entail. Their concern made me question whether I would be OK at home. I've been at home for three days and doing well. I'm not in pain; I have managed to cook, wash dishes, and bathe myself. So I think it was good to know their concern. But, I think it's worth considering if the patient has previous surgery experience to understand if they're cognisant of what's involved before questioning the patient's home situation following surgery.

Nadeem Mushtaq and Jon Simmonds spent a lot of time in the initial consultation examining my ankle, discussing the different treatment options and what the surgery would involve. I also grasped what the rehabilitation would look like for the first two weeks. In addition, they're both experienced surgeons relating to my specific injury type and work at a hospital where I was treated under Dinesh Nathwani and Jagdeep Nanchahal. Dinesh recommended Nadeem and Jon, and I have to say I felt in very safe hands before surgery and at the hospital.

Some physio exercises to do at home to strengthen the ankle outside of what I was given in the hospital.
