22nd December 2022

I am husband of a patient who was at 4th floor for 2 weeks. All doctors, nurses and other staff were dedicated to making sure my wife was looked after well at all times. She suffered from some anxiety following surgery, and the staff quickly learned how to look after my wife most proactively.

Suggested improvements
As above, my wife suffered from anxiety after surgery. It became apparent that CCL is not so well geared up for psychiatrists to attend to patients. It took a few days for my wife to be seen by a psychiatrist, and the doctors on the ward were not prepared for this - didn't have the phone numbers etc. However, once the psych doctors were contacted, they were excellent. So my advice would be for the 4th floor to be more prepared for mental health issues, esp as they are dealing with neurology patients who may have very significant diagnoses. A separate small point. Again re mental health, if someone has a mental health issue, it is important to let them rest and not ask them for hard tasks. For example, closer integration of all staff on the ward to ensure that a patient is not constantly being disturbed (for food, therapy, doctor visit, cleaning etc) would be helpful. Also, the ipad system of ordering food is very hard for someone to manage after surgery. A proper menu printed would be helpful.

Utterly exceptional consultant.

All the staff on the 4th floor were exceptional. Every single one was excellent. The comments above are for managers to take account of, not the staff on the ward, who are exceptional.
