The facilities, warmth of welcome, care from surgeon, doctors and nurses were out-standing.
Suggested improvements
Both the Clinic and surgeon told me I required a two night stay. BUPA would only cover one night.
I have a complex medical history and knew I was not ready to go home after only one night: very high pain levels in post-op recovery, the need for a PCA, an allergic reaction to one or more of the meds and a general feeling of being too unwell to go home resulted in a notable amount of time and stress securing an extended stay.
It was no-one’s fault; everyone was as helpful as possible. I made clear that I was happy to pay whatever additional cost necessary. Ultimately, the allergic reaction provided a reason for the Clinic to approach BUPA and the second night’s stay was approved.
It seemed that BUPA’s coverage determined the length of care rather than the doctors and nurses assessing individual circumstances. I wonder if there is a better and more timely way to resolve similar situations going forward.
Also, I was given discharge instructions for the many meds but nothing relating to post-op expectations (adhesiolysis, appendectomy), wound care, what to expect re pain levels, limiting movement, returning to exercise, etc. I am still in a lot of pain and don’t know if that’s normal. Perhaps some of this was communicated verbally but, given the level of meds, I was not aware enough to take note.
Everyone was very kind and caring. Couldn’t ask for better.
