In a state of the art facility with top professionals dedicated to supporting me. It was evident.

Suggested improvements
1) Bathrooms / very difficult to use. The flush button requires considerable reach, and is hard to press, especially if one has chest wounds. A lever would have made a huge difference. The location of toilet paper is sub-optimal. Water pressure is poor and water temperature is low, which made showering something I feared, because I was so afraid of being cold. In addition, the bathroom needs more hooks, because as a cardiac patient, I had to have the cardiac monitor on at all times, but I could not stand or sit easily at toilet, or stand at sink because there was no place to hang it. I know bathroom design sounds trite, but given all that I was trying to manage, the bathroom became a source of stress. 2) Room temperature / very difficult to manage. The room swung between too hot and too cold, with very little time in between. This was a function of an off thermostatic control, i.e., one did not simply set the desired temperature, which was located in a permanently shady part of the room. Sunlight could heat up the room considerably, but I did not want to close during day because I wanted to keep my sense of day and night aligned. 3) Food. I would have found it helpful to have a paper menu of some sort. I was parched for days after the procedure, and was mostly looking for foods that would help to get me hydrated, in addition to water, because I needed the calories. I could not see what was available to me, and that would have been helpful. 4) Noise control. Anything to reduce the noise from monitors and alarms.

Plain and simple: my consultant is the leader in his field.

The people clearly stood out. I was very impressed. From the top medical staff to the porters and food service people. I tried to learn the name of everyone whom I met, and what I found was that each one responded with remarkable care and warmth. Some, whom I met on 3rd fl. ICU, even came up to see me in the days that followed on the 5th floor to check my progress. A few individuals should be called out... Nancy-ICU nurse, who was with me three nights in the ICU, and who stayed in the room with me at my request to support me when I was both vulnerable and scared Helen-food service, 3rd floor, who brightened my every day; she later figured out how to work on the 5th floor so that she could look after my diet and nutrition Angel-ICU nurse who made a point of spending time with me later on the 5th floor in order to make sure that I adjusted successfully Silvia-ICU nurse, who like Angel made a point to see me on the 5th floor; Silvia also took special care with some of my wound care, where she was unhappy with the manner in which the wound had been dressed by the surgeon Lisa-physiotherapy, who is based on 3rd floor but made a point of working with me each day on the 5th floor. She pushed me on the physio, which was helpful. But more importantly, she had come to realise that I was very sad, and made it her business to help me lift myself up. These people are very special, and are a tribute to your organisation.
