As I sat down within the treatment room, the nurse left the room to deal with another unrelated issue. Upon her return, the nurse explained she could not prescribe the medication due to my BMI being slightly over. As a healthcare professional myself, I completely understand this requirement for nurse prescribers. However, her tone and bedside manner was patronising and unprofessional. For example, using phrases such as “you do understand don’t you?”. The nurse then proceeded to say I can be prescribed the mini pill, or “go on a health kick”. This comment is not only unprofessional and inappropriate, but also incredibly damaging. On your website, you signpost individuals to ‘Beat’ (the UK’s eating disorder charity) so I am unsure why one of your nurses would use this type of language? Furthermore, this nurse had not built any form of rapport with myself to understand why my BMI may be higher. I am a weight lifter and swim competitively 4 times a week, so my muscle mass is considerably higher than the average female. This nurse did not act in accordance with the core nursing competencies, and demonstrated a clear lack of communication and interpersonal skills.

Suggested improvements
The nurse in question would benefit from a review of the Standards for Competence for Registered Nurses.
