Review of Labour Ward (BDGH) written by a patient
12th May 2017

I received great care by the midwife staff. Although I had 5 different midwives, they all introduced themselves and made the care seamless. There was some issue in regards to medication and how much I had received, it didn't seem as though everything had been documented. I felt let down by the care of the doctors though. One put a cannula in my arm and not my hand without consulting my midwife & the reason given for it being put in my arm was that she preferred to put them there. It was very uncomfortable & stopped working most of the time because I was bending my elbow. There was also a student doctor present when I was giving birth. He wasn't really introduced and at first I had no idea he was a student, it wasn't till another doctor arrived & took charge that I really knew what was happening. The student did not fill me with any confidence at all. He did not speak & had a look about him that he didn't really know what to do. This was particularly present when he came to stitch me up, he was on his own with needle & thread & a very confused look on his face. The other doctor came in & took charge thankfully. The care from the midwifery team was very good, but the care from the doctors let me down and was quite poor.

Very slow to see a midwife about my care. Very slow to discharge, the staff seemed to be very busy & I feel that I could have been discharged hours earlier than I was. Loved that my husband could stay with me overnight, it made a huge difference to my mental wellbeing as well as physically. Overall my care was ok but not fantastic

Review of A&E (Bassetlaw) written by a patient
14th April 2017

From walking into a & e I was waiting 2hrs to see someone. I then got called to see a nurse by the name of Patricia Wilson. Patrica was very helpful and gave me good advice about my bad wound. She cleaned it up, put some cream on bandaged me up then gave a tetanus as I can't remember the last time I had one. Patricia then went and gave me some antibiotics just in case it was infected which was the reason I went to the hospital in the 1st place. If all the staff was as efficient and helpful as this member of staff I'm sure the NHS would be in a better condition.

I was directed to A & E by the 111 service. I was immediately triaged at reception and shortly after was given an ECG and bloods were taken. Dept was very busy. However I was transferred onto a trolley and put on oxygen. I had a long wait for the Duty Doctor who was seeing numerous patients. However he carried out a detailed assessment and organised an Xray. The Doctor discussed with my wife and myself the possibilities for my low oxygen level and poor respiration together with the history of my problems with COPD and more particularly worsening situation over the course of the past 2/3 weeks. He commenced a course of medication and had me transfected to CDU at approximately midnight. At 01.00 a lady doctor discussed further treatment. She arranged a CT scan for the morning and an injection later that night. I was put on a nebuliser, antibiotics and water medication and Prednisolone and had the scan in the morning. I was on 24 hour oxygen throughout Friday and Saturday. I transferred to C1 on Saturday and came off the 24 hour oxygen later that day. Eventually my sats recovered sufficiently for me to return home on Sunday afternoon. My care throughout was excellent from Nurses, Doctors ancillary staff. They are a real credit to DBH. The catering was absolutely outstanding. The content, preparation and presentation was very impressive. I have never enjoyed hospital catering so much in a long life of experience. Many many thanks and congratulatons on an excellent service.

I've had good and bad experiences it really depends on what you come in with. Mental health needs some serious attention.
